GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 2)

It’s by far the best tuner I have owned.

I will third those Peterson Strobe Tuners!

Yep, Peterson strobes. The kitty’s sleepwear, bar none.

The Korg should be good enough. It’s not like most of us would hear the difference anyway

If you have a DAW, use MTuner.
It is free, very precise and easy to use!

Also, it’s part of the free MFreeFXBundle, which includes many great little plugins, comparable with (also free) Kilohearts essential bundle.

You can invest the money you saved on a hardware tuner for some other nice stuff, ie: if you don’t have a DAW you can buy the full version of Reaper instead…

Hey all - I am out for like a week and takes an hour to read back, damn you folks

Now I believe I nearly maxed out my crusade for the Aerodyne as just finished purchasing the MIJ Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass from Japan. Most importantly TWO of them  These actual ones:

The dolphin grey is dated 2002-2004 and the white is a 2020 model, as I couldn’t decide neither on the decade nor the color :smiling_face_with_horns: Also eyeing with the candy apple red but trying (MUST) to stop myself. Always nice to be aware of personal issues, right?

Asked my good ol’ friend AI to support and tell me which one to choose, well wasn’t excelling in it:

So upon receiving them from Japan (Hungarian VAT of 27% will hurt a lot I’m telling ya  ) will play both and will decide which one to keep - the one feeling right for me. Really having my fingers crossed that shipment succeeds without issues and I can have two of this iconic instrument in my dirty hands

Awesome!

Shipping from Japan will likely be faster than you think

What shop did you buy them from?

One comes via Reverb (Lucky’ Gear Bazar, Kanagawa) and one via eBay (ArcMG-store, I believe in Tokyo but not 100% sure).

Oh and latter (shipping the white) pointed out twice that he’s taking the neck off for much safer shipment, even sent a picture of two boxes not to get worried :+1:

Both of them have been kind and supportive, high ratings as well (4.9 on Reverb and 100% on eBay respectively).

Cool. Kanagawa is in the Kanto near Tokyo too. Sounds like reputable sellers.

Not sure how to phrase it in English but direct translation of the worse part of my mixed feelings is “couldn’t fit a grain of rice into my bumhole” now, but trusted Japanese sellers of reputable portals as Reverb and eBay rather than anyone else in the world, might just be positive discrimination, we’ll see (soon enuff I hope  )

Beforehand I have made a few online purchases (Thomann, Muziker, Kytary - all respected European pages) and had a bit of business here with awesome fellow bassist SunDOG on his former Ampero, always good experiences, never any issues.

But Aerodyne pops up only like once a year in Hungary (never had a chance to even touch one) therefore had to go with ordering from far away. Now I will have two to test, expecting major differences based on my online study in craftmanship for sure, and I hope to feel the soul difference in them but might not be skilled enough yet.

I was wondering how difficult it is to read the strobo-display (@howard @Al1885 @Tommydogg @MikeC )?

My electrotechnics teacher always preached “wer misst, misst Mist” which is a german saying to not forget about accuracy rates and human error from reading the measurements off the device.

Unfortunately the working Korg has no line in and I wasn’t able yet to figure out why the line in of the other one isn’t working . The microphone seems to have issues with the lower notes. Also I can hear that the intonation is off on the higher frets but I can’t read it out with the korg, because the display is jumping

So that is the biggest advantage. The reason I love it is not the accuracy- all tuners, even bad ones, are plenty accurate.

It’s all about ease of use. The strobe display makes it amazingly easy to dial in fast, and the one I have (the HD) has an amazing bright full-pedal display, like a pedalboard smartphone.

Which reminds me their iPhone app is good too and like $15.

There’s even a Peterson app for $9.99

Indeed, I hadn’t seen that. I have an older model that works for instrument cables.

No DAW yet! I thought about that, right now turning via garageband seems to be more accurate than the korg mic BUT I feel like a proper tuner is essential and I don’t want to have to always hassle with my computer to play.

My budget options are

  1. secondhand polytune 2 from tc electronic for 32.- CHF

  2. secondhand boss TU-2 for 45.- CHF

Garageband is a DAW
MTuner/MFreeFXBundle should work with that too. Just try it before you buy any hardware. For a sofa player, it’s a great solution!

You can also use the free Fender Guitar Tuner App. It works bot with built-in microphone and a DAI…

but I waaaaaant hardware :face_holding_back_tears:

that’s why I asked for opinions in the GAS thread :joy:

I found huge differences between app and tuner. I abandoned the app.

This isn’t an old-school, mechanical strobe, it’s electronic, and this is not an issue
