GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 2)

Fairly simple rule for the ‘80s/‘90s:

Made in Japan - made by Fujigen for Fender
Crafted in Japan - made by Tokai for Fender

both are great

Great! That’s nice. Thanks, Howard!

Good point! Once I have the two basses I’ll decide what to do.
I have noticed in my case that having two doesn’t make things easier for me. Should I use… but if I put xx strings on it… but compared to the other…
One makes me learn more about EQ and tone and practice. We’ll see…

Last post in order not to bore you with the topic.
I GOT IT! It plays really smoothly, it’s intonated out of the case and the fretboard is together with the frets in good condition without visible wear. No noises.
I’m amazed by the range of the tone pot which smoothly changes and not within a small part of the turn. I’m really happy with how it sounds and it’s really not comparable to the other Squier p-basses I’ve had although I think most of them are really good basses. I’m really happy!

On the side, the case has the logo of a band and I looked it up. It seems to have belonged to the bassist of a band called PENACHO from a hardcore neighborhood in Mexico City and they mainly played on the street.
Rock in Mexico has its own history. Take into account that rock concerts were prohibited until the late '60s and Mexico’s Avandaro Festival in 1971 is the equivalent of Woodstock which lead to some local rock legends. This street style (music, appearance and subversive attitude) persists in many ways.

Anyways, here a video of that band with this bass guitar and the bassist is wearing a T-Shirt with the same logo of the case: https://youtu.be/55A4WDXIdiw?si=r9OEQLHbuuP2bbiP

Thanks again for the support and input! Happy 4th of July!

I think so, too. They were typically Made in Mexico in the '80s. Made out of wood. I’m actually considering restoring it but leaving it as it is.

That is awesome and yes definitely keep the case!

'80s-'90s MIJ Fenders are sought after, you got a nice instrument there.

Love it! Love the case even more - keep it that way forever!!!

Thanks @howard. I love the case. And as far as the bass is concerned I’m loving it too with all the scars and marks it has. It tells a story and it’s very congruent with my photography where I often shoot urban decay. Best thing is how nicely it plays. I cleaned it and put WD-40 on the hardware but other than that, don’t fix it if it works.
I’d love a Japanese name for it but I don’t know any other than Aiko. Suggestions?

Very nice congrats! I really like the band too. I’ve been watching some of their performances. Guy’s name is Manuel Ibarra from what I can gather. I’ll add another vote for definitely keep the case.

Aiko is a good name; “love/affection” and then either “child” or “preference/like” depending on the second kanji, usually

But what does the bass mean to you?

Love affection is great. Is there a name or word for “respect/appreciation” for objects that carry some sort of vibe due to their history?

Cool you researched all that. That’s not the name of the sender. I just hope this bass wasn’t stolen from him…

Kansha can mean thanks.

We’re all getting older @franx and washing more face, so how about:

Men With Comb-Overs – Baakoodo Jin (バーコード人)

Fantastic looking bass, very happy for you.

Well I’m not 100% sure on that name…
He could have sold or traded it at a shop. Lots of shops extend their reach by selling online even Sweetwater does but under a different name. Besides you mentioned earlier in the thread that you couldn’t try it but you could return it. I wouldn’t think they’d make that concession if it were hot.
