What style of bass would you prefer? There’s a lot in that price range.

Hi @howard,

I have Harley Benton JB-20 Std and I’m open to any advise from you.

I don’t have preferences and I’m looking for Fender/Squier JB, Yamaha TRBX304, Cort , Tobias, Ibanez…

I was about to make a couple suggestions but then saw the prices at Thomann are much higher than I expected. Hmm, might need someone more familiar with prices in Europe to chime in.

If you’re looking for a J-style bass in that price range, you probably can’t beat a Sire Marcus Miller V3 or V3P. The Squier Classic Vibe (CV) 60s and 70s jazz basses are nice too.

If you’re looking for something a bit less traditional, I’d check out the Ibanez SR300E(B) and the Sire Marcus Miller M2 if I were you.

Definitely check out pre-owned options in your area as well. You might be able to get a good deal there.

Ibanez is very very interesting as Yamaha tbrx 304.

Haven’t been around (actively, just reading) lately, GAS was kept on hold - but just found a Trace Elliot Elf for ~70% of new price so guessed go for it.

After quick testing through the only cab I have at home (the Ashdown RM112T) I have noticed a little “hum” when any input is inserted (quiet without anything plugged in) but otherwise playing OK. After some research figured that it might be connected to gain LED is not lighting green as expected (from user’s manual: "When the LED is green, the instrument signal is passing through the preamp without any compression. When
the LED begins to flash red, more and more compression is occuring in the preamp as the GAIN control is advanced. (…) When the GAIN control is at maximum clockwise rotation, a musically useful overdrive distortion
circuit is engaged. "
So I’d expect input signal detection should trigger the LED to go green but it’s not happening, higher gain and heavier plucking brings on compression with red LED, distortion also works with full gain added, it’s just the “regular” stage that no LED is showing and in theory it can cause the “hum”, edit: that disappears when housing is touched by my finger - anyone with similar experience with any amp? Edit: tested with other basses/leads and other power sockets, same issue is non-existent with my Ampeg RB210 with same setup that I have checked to make sure.
Should I not worry just keep it and enjoy giving no crap about little hum when “idle” but on? Thanks for suggestion in advance!

Thank you

I really wanted an Ultra Violet but was having a lot of trouble without seeing it in person because some pics they come across very pinkish, and others a deep purple and for that much money I wanted to know exactly what I was getting.

So while I was back and forthing over email with the very nice and exceptionally helpful JD Owens at Bass Central (I can’t recommend these guys enough) about one they had coming in in September he found out that Dingwall had to turn back an entire shipping container of stock from China due to QA issues. That’s why a lot of the Chinese based Dingwalls are showing up back ordered at the moment. This included my Ultra Violet and Dingwall were telling JD it’d be November at the absolute earliest and more likely up to 6 months.

I got lucky they happened to have the one black burst left in stock with the Pau Ferro fretboard and it’s always been my second choice in colour so I jumped on it.

I bought my D-Rock at Bass Central in person, those guys are the real OGs!

From what I have seen I think it’s more of a dark amethyst which for me would be perfect.

Welcome to the Dingwall club! They’re cool, aren’t they?! :metal:

This 4 string is gorgeous, and relatively consistent with the pictures that Dingwall has on their site that I fell in love with:

bass central:

Dingwall:

The top one is what I emailed to JD as my example of perfect and asked about picture lighting differences and consistency in finishes from Dingwall.

I also included these two that I pulled off the bass central site as examples of the kind of extremes in colour variance that were putting me off on pulling the buy now trigger.

He pulled both of those two basses out and took pics in the shop with his phone to show me. The 4 string actually looks consistent to me with the website picture. The 5 string website picture definitely suffered from some lighting issues. That said both shop pictures look similar to each other and neither are the deep dark purple I wanted and definitely didn’t have the near black edge that I was expecting based on all the dingwall site pictures.

If I saw these in a shop, I’d walk past without a second look.

To further confound the issue, this was one of the other pictures of the 4 string maple above on the website and this also looks beautiful enough that I could forgive the lack of blackness around the edges. I thought this was actually a different bass but enough of the pattern matches up that I do believe it is the same one.

This suggests that the UV is incredibly sensitive to the lighting you see it in and why I ended up going with the black burst cause I was seriously doing some overthinking

Danke

Oh lord yes, I frickin love it. It’s got a wonderful grr to it that hits all my happy spots. Are you using Nickle or the Stainless Steel strings on yours? I’m still using the nickle atm but JD threw in a set of the SS strings for me.

The 5th string is still tripping me up a bit, especially when I am playing from 4 string tabs, but I’m getting there slowly. The fanned frets are also taking a bit to get used too but I do like them and both issues are simply a matter of time and playing.

I did have to laugh after 2 days of exclusively playing the Dingwall, I picked my Yamaha up and it felt so tiny in comparison.

Ok, I’m looking for an used TRBX304 and Ibanez SR300EB.

What do you think about Peavey Grind 4 NTB?

Yes those look like lighting but TBH it’s still one of my two favorite colors (the other being midnight blue. Ask @jerryp - I love his BBP34 but was really eyeing the midnight one in that shop  )

daaaaaammmmmnnnnnnn

Also be on the lookout for good prices on used TRBX504’s and SR500e; basically better versions of the other two.

I’m not actually sure. I think they are stainless… What I do know is that I like their gauge, they make my other bases feel really quite clunky.

The only issue I’ve found is if you are trying g to play the D and the G strings around the 1st to 5th frets, the spacing is pretty wide and can catch you - for example, if playing a B on the A string, then going for the 5th and the octave. Other than that, I’ve not had an issue.

 yep! Imagine going from the Dingwall to my short scale headless Ibanez, it’s like ‘wow, this thing is tiny!

The Dingwalls are fantastic instruments though, I love mine. With the fan-frets, they just look so damn cool. It’s a bonus that they are so nice to play as well!
