watching a few vids online, i dont have the finger dexterity that i see on others stretching across 4 frets but ill try and make it work for me.

Welcome aboard! Phil Lesh was in a class of his own. What a talent. Very musical. Since Phil never played the exact same bass line twice, your best bet is to search for tabs of their studio recordings. There’s not a whole heck of a lot out there. For example, Guitar Pro has two and Songsterr listed one. Check out his “Mission Control” bass by Alembic!

One interesting resource is their online archive of recordings. You’d have to do the transcriptions yourself.

Welcome, @sadexpunk. Glad you’re here. The best age to learn bass is when you start. Just follow Josh’s lead and you’ll be thumping in no time. Enjoy the lessons!

Hi! Norm here. Bought my southpaw Fender J back in February 2008 and initially took in person lessons then for about a year, but then moved and real life just took over like it does. Had a few stops and starts with trying to play and learn again but nothing really stuck…still remember the basics though. That leads to now (well, a little over a month ago), was reading the bass subreddit and had also seen the Bassbuzz videos pop up on my YouTube and this spot came highly recommended! Might be slow going but it’s felt nice to pick up the bass again.

Other things: registered nurse for almost 10 years, DJ on the side, and hobbies besides bass include reading, collecting Lego, building my vinyl collection back up, and ballroom dance. Hi everyone.

Hey Melissa…welcome to the BassBuzz community. There is a bassist on YouTube with a bunch of Dead bass tabs (Bass Tabs by Jason). I’ve been playing for a little over a year and find the Dead songs very challenging. Phil Lesh seems to go all over the neck and changes things up constantly. I thought I’d start with a slower song like Attics of My Life or Brokedown Palace, but when I isolate the bass to try to figure it out, I oftentimes scratch my head and wonder how he’s making that sound. So, I have put aside the Dead and am going to circle back to them when I get more advanced. Have fun on your bass journey!

Phil Lesh was an accomplished jazz musician before joining the Dead. That said, he had never played bass before. Jerry Garcia had been teaching guitar for years prior to the Dead’s formation, and he actually taught Phil bass and Bob Weir guitar. No wonder why Jerry and these guys meshed together so seamlessly.

Hello All!

Learning to play bass as a bored mom of two young kids. I need an outlet and I love music but i always lacked the confidence to try any instrument. My boyfriend got me a bass for Christmas and I’m now officially learning with the help of this course. Super excited for a hobby all my own. I’ve only just now started the modules but I’m sure this will be a helpful community of folks.
