I wanted to say hello. I’m new to playing bass within the past two months.
I’m 45, have some musical experience, but haven’t ever played bass. I cheaped out and bought a bass off of Amazon to start with, only to buy a Jackson JS2 a month later!
I am into module 3 and absolutely loving it! Josh is such a cool teacher and I’m enjoying the variety of songs too!
My previous musical experience is with guitar. I got my first guitar over 20 years ago, I’ve practiced that on and off, never really made any progress with it beyond basics. My choice of guitar was a cheap left-handed tele-type copy.
I’ve always been fascinated by bass, some of my favourite players include for example Chris Squire, Paul McCartney, John Entwistle and Mark King. So couple of years ago I decided that I want to try myself to play some bass. But I didn’t want to make things to easy (or cheap) to myself so I decided to build my own bass. About two years ago I finished my P/J bass, body was made from ash tree cut down some years earlier from neighbors’ yard (with permission). In the end I was quite satisfied with the result, even though I soon discovered many imperfections with the finished bass. But building experience was really nice and educational.
I begun to practice bass playing same way I had done with guitar, reading some instruction books and watching random youtube videos. I quite soon realized that this way I would never progress any more than with guitar. Luckily I came across with Bassbuzz videos in Youtube which I found extremely educational. Then one day I decided to risk it and invested in B2B-course and have to say that I was not disappointed. This course really opened the world of bass to me.
Earlier this year I decided that I must remake my bass because I now understood better the mistakes I made originally in the building process. Especially the paint job wasn’t good enough. Because this remake process would take several months I decided to also buy myself a second bass. As a left-hander I chose Höfner contemporary series bass, which I found very nice choice.
During the summer I finally managed to rebuild my original P/J bass, slight tweaking with the shape and the height of pickups and totally new paintjob. Paintjob didn’t quite succeed as well as I wanted but still a lot better than previously, and overall now the bass is much nicer to play. Picture below.
Hi everyone, im a 53 from Melbourne Australia. I’ve just started playing bass in the last few weeks. Knowing that I’d be off work for 3 months. I needed something to keep myself busy. Listening to Iron Maiden one night. Ohh, that hard driving Bass. That’s what i want to do.
I played trumpet and saxophone throughout school and for a few years afterwards. In the school band, we even won a few competitions. I picked up the guitar for a time in my 20’s but due to limited finances and getting into the night club scene. It was gradually forgotten and life’s priorities took its place.
Which brings me to now. I bought a bass package. Got it home, it didn’t work. Took it back to the shop. They said they would replace it. A phone call the next day. The pick up was faulty and the supplier didn’t have any stock of left-handed basses. So they would replace the pick ups. Sitting at home staring at an amp for a week. I went in search of another bass. Being impatient and a “lefty”, options were limited. Alot of searching, I found an “in stock” ProIIPMIA. The proud owner of now 2 basses. One makes me smile. The other, I’m brave enough to tinker with all the adjustments.
How times have changed. I also found all the information and community of the internet. I’m looking forward to doing some courses.
