Hi all - 44 from NY here. I got my bass a couple of weeks ago after always wanting one. I have a piano background but I struggle with the bass clef. What better way to improve that by learning an instrument that is almost exclusively on it? ?

I also rationalized (My girlfriend says ‘justified’ would be more accurate) that learning bass would help me be less anti-social. My hope is to get good enough to maybe join a local band or something.

Anyway, after jumping around on YouTube and Reddit for a bit, the consensus seems to say that Bass Buzz is the best place to be and the forum is second to none. Wish me luck!

By the way - Ever since I decided I wanted to get a bass I can’t not hear the bass line in every song. Has this happened to anyone else?

Welcome @Tarkisal - and yes, I also cannot unhear the bass line and this is now even growing stronger since I have started learning bass. And I believe that it should be exactly like that. Other than that, if you enjoy some time alone with your bass, then I think that’s totally fine. If you wanna join a band, also fine. It’s important to know where you want to travel in this journey. At least I can say that I absolutely enjoy the course and my “alone-time” with the bass, it’s somehow meditative. Seriously man, I hope that this “playing-bass-will-make-you-less-anti-social” thing you mentioned won’t hit me… :joy:

Hi all!
I’m Ness from Margaret River, Western Australia. Took up bass as 2025 kicked off and spent 8 months now having a BLAST!! Have a great teacher / mentor and jam with him weekly as we build up a set list along with other students in our learner band ha ha!
I’ve always loved music and played woodwind from 6yo to 18yo but put all that aside when life took over!
I became unwell in 2000, diagnosed with MS in 2008 and got my first piano in 2009 to help with my therapy. Was playing keyboards last few years then took up bass when our group lost our bass player.
Thanks Josh and team for helping me get started with your free videos. Ready now to take it to the next level!

PS started with an Ibanez Mikro that I ADORE as I’m only a small lady with tiny hands. Also picked up a Hofner Ignition but selling this one as not my sound I discovered… then after trying every bass I could get my hands on I FELL IN LOVE with the new Epiphone Grabber!! She’s a BEAST and can’t believe I’ve gone from bubba bass to the mother of all basses!! But she just ‘fits’ and feels like home!!!
