Hi gang. I just joined the community about a week ago. I first started playing bass in high school about 25 years ago. I played pretty steadily until I got to university. So I’ve played in front of audiences a handful of times. But it’s been so long that I definitely consider myself a beginner. And wouldn’t you know it, I’m learning stuff in module 1 that I didn’t know.
I got myself a Fender rumble 40 and squier affinity jazz. I still have my old Yamaha RBX765A and Godin BG4 but they really need some tlc. For now this jazz bass has me excited and motivated to play.
Honestly despite my prior experience I cringe at the thought of how I used to play. Just sloppy and lazy. But I had fun fighting my way through some Primus and Iron Maiden and whatever rock songs were popular at the time. Now I’m discovering new styles like pop and country. I actually want to dive into Motown but turns out that’s the deep end of the pool. I guess I better get back to Module 2
Hi All! Amanda from Wisconsin here.
I’m what I refer to as a ‘lapsed’ guitar player (I’ve technically played since high school, but for the last 10-15 years I’ve gone large chunks of time without picking it up.) As a result, I can play chords and the like just fine, but my other skills have gone by the wayside.
Recently, as I’m moving into 2026–the year were I turn the big 4-0
– I got the itch to get back into music and asked for a bass for Christmas. For the longest time I’ve wished I’d have picked bass up instead of guitar all those years ago. My dad–who is a former musician–obliged and bought me a Squire Affinity Series Jaguar H. Yay!
Back when I first learned guitar I tried a few months of lessons, but mostly taught myself stuff/songs. I think that’s the big reason why I never progressed as far as I would have liked. So now that I’m picking up the bass after all of the years, I wanted to make sure I didn’t just try to learn a bunch of songs. I came across Josh’s videos on Youtube and decided to try the course here as that extra guidance and I’m glad I did. I’m already into module 2 – and even though my brain is like “this is super easy” I feel like I’m unlearning bad habits and learning good ones–especially around fretting and muting. I’m excited to continue this journey and explore the community. Rock on!
Your experience is sounding similar to mine. I used to always try to have my thumb perpendicular to the neck. Even going through module one my thumb was really pressing into the neck and making me fret each string so hard. Then came the lesson about applying counter pressure with my plucking hand. Just in time too.
Hi from another 40-something in Wisconsin!
Welcome Amanda, glad to have you here!
its strange that I can now understand written music although very slowly. struggling with the stretching. module 5 I found tough. but I can the practises on slow and some on medium. so I must be learning something.
Good to be here. I have strummed chords on a guitar and sang for years but never picked up a bass. My brother who makes his living playing guitar said any self-respecting guitarist should always be able to pick up a bass. So here I am…
Lol, and I picked up guitar a few months ago for the same reason.
Hello Everyone!
My name Is Daniel from the Kansas City area. A long time ago I had one of those bass kits from Guitar Center where it was a guitar, amp, and case. But I ended up having to sell it for rent money because my roommates at the time weren’t the best. You gotta do what you need to do to get by, am I right?
Fast forward to this last Christmas, my best friend got get me a Ibanez. I was saving up for one myself but that beautiful bastard beat me to it. So with that money I saved I got a starter amp and hookups.
So here we are. 100% fresh start. Level 0. Taking it seriously this time so I’m signing up for the B2B course later this week. Really super excited.
Nice! Sweet looking bass. Have fun!
