Yeah. If I were looking at live use and I wanted to save CPU for just the synth and drums (pretty likely), I would just go with a Helix, probably a HX Stomp these days. As much as I would GAS a Quad Cortex in that situation.
A Quad Cortex can route 4 separate channels. I can imagine other band players can make use of it as well. A sound engineer would be happy, just plug and play
Nice board! My current setup is just the Darkglass Photon which has a compressor, distortion, eq and cabsim in one. Only downside is that they didn’t added a fx loop . I prefer to use my chorus before the cabsim.
I’d need a mixer anyway but just plugging both guitars and bass in to it would be nice yeah, and use it for both. Might be worth it. The other option would be a full Helix but the cost is not too different then.
For sure! This guy made a demo just using the default presets. Sounds good to me and I also love the looks of his instruments.
Paul Davids did a comparison of it up against a Kemper for Guitar as well. It’s definitely not just for bass
I love their products.
Paul Davids is such a good guitar player. If I recall correctly he used to live near me before they moved to a new house/studio. The cool thing with NeuralDSP (and Darkglass for that matter) is that they often release major updates to software. CorOS 1.3.0 is now available - Neural DSP
He’s definitely my favorite guitar youtuber.
Watching Paul David’s new pink pedalboard build by the TPS guys was pretty inspiring. Both Paul and Dan’s new boards run an interesting feature I’d been wanting to do for a while. Not true stereo but dual mono. Lots of folks do it for multiple amp setups but that’s unrealistic for my actual functions. I wanted the feature without the weight and complications. And it had to be versatile enough for the times I’m playing bass or guitar or acoustic.
This board has probably been rebuilt 6 times since the POC stage but it’s staying like this for a while sans soldering custom cable lengths.
The story is:
Input to fuzz into switcher
Loop 1 tuner (makes it a kill switch too)
Loop 2 Boss PW10 for wah and Univibe primarily
Loop 3 NuX Masamune compressor(always on)
Loop 4 Saucy Box for the big Hairy drive
Loop 5 out to ABY box. Channel 1 goes to the m9 and back to the return of loop 5. Channel 2 goes to the Tumnus Deluxe which is always on as a preamp to replicate the front end of an amp. I play into clean bass amps or modelers primarily. Into the rv6 and then into the Saturnworks blend at the end. Top left.
Switcher out goes to the blend as well. The loop switcher and blend box both come from Saturnworks and all channels have a master control volume to keep pedals at ideal setting and making unity volume easier. All to keep from throwing mud into space as the m9 is my delay/reverb/weird sounds machine.
TMI. I know but thanks for listening.
No way. I like hearing about how people set up their boards, especially more complex ones like this.
How do you like the RV-6? I got one for my son and thought it sounded pretty great.
I loved my RV-3. That’s a great pedal line.
I like it a lot @eric.kiser. I have it there to keep my final drive tone from being dead dry, plus all the creative possibilities.
It mostly depends on what you want out of it. Side by side most people like the RV-5 if the modulated reverb is what they are after. But this one has some features that more than make up for the difference. It has a shimmer mode. The trick with shimmer, is don’t. Turn the tone all the way to the left and listen to the amazing ambient apace that was hiding underneath. So good. The expression input is a nice feature that I fully intend to utilize when I make cables for this thing. I’ll be cabling it to a port in the patch bay for external connection. For extra fun, a split trs cable into either side of a wah and put the single end into the reverb expression input…. Spacey fun aplenty.
@howard this has an RV-3 setting!! So you can get a delay and Reverb at the same time.
Sweet. It was possible to do some supremely shoegazey stuff very easily with that pedal.
How do you like this compressor?
Like I need another compressor, but hey… I am a compressor geek.
But not that big a geek, I only have 4 right now.
I wish I knew that. I got one when I was testing Reverbs, and I got a lot of them from Amazon and returned most of them. The thing about the RV-6 to me, was it added way too much warmth to the tone. I like an icee Cold reverb. I kind of like one that makes it seem like you are in a creepy gymnasium where you can only hear a pin drop.
Does this RV-3 setting on the RV-6 get back to the coldness of the older one?
Does this RV-3 setting on the RV-6 get back to the coldness of the older one?
Good question. The coldness of the RV-3 was one of the major draws for me. A very '80s/early '90s reverb sound, loved it. Then throw on the delay too and it was just amazing.
@T_dub @howard I’ve only had the RV-5 and RV-6 on my boards to compare. I contemplated and RV-3 for my small board but the NuX Atlantic’s won that fight. I’ll have to mess with it in a standalone scenario and get back to you on a comparison. Maybe now is a good time to figure out how to do sound samples and post them.
How do you like this compressor?
I like it a lot. I haven’t had as many as you but this one has been my favorite so far. The review on YouTube are great. Took a minute to get the feel I wanted but it worked great in my setup both Friday night and Sunday morning. I currently have it set so that I can’t use both channels at once. So when you turn the booster on it turns the compressor off and vice versa. I like the overall tone best that way for the variety of instruments that get plugged into this board.
Are you talking about the NU<X compressor, or the snake bite we traded for in the past?
Truth be told that I have not spend that much time with it, but other then the DRIVE feature in the Markbass, they are similar.
Have tried the NU<X, but if you are happy with it, I may just get it from Amazon, give it a try and probably return it. Otherwise, if I find I like it better then any I have, I may be selling one of them.
How do you like it compared to the Boss Bass Comp - BC-1X
@T_dub I was referring to the NuX. Yessir. I’d say give it a try. I also have an Xotic SP1 compressor in the box of not on board noise machines. You’re welcome to try that one.
I have a small bass board going to together right now. Hopefully get to gig it this weekend so I’ll get back with you on the BC1X. Getting my Morley Cliff Burton fuzz wah before it and a Zoom G3 after it for some octave, phaser and slapback delay. And the all important tuner.
Sounds like a blast. I was not so worried about what yo did with the Boss Bass Comp BC-1X, I mean to each their own. You certainly don’t know me anything when it comes to compressors.
I too have not had too much chance to try out the snake charmer, but being a tube, similar to the Markbass, I am sure I will love it.
What I have not decided yet, is there a board big enough for the two of them, or do I need to create 2 separate boards just for those. (or course one of each will still partner with one of my other 4 compressors,
