thanks @howard !
Thank you for your thoughtful reply @John_E … I’ll take all that in consideration for the future. May even do a redo on this, I’m deliberating that right now. Want to finish up my cover of She’s Kerosene first, then we’ll see.
Thanks Jerry! ![]()
Hey guys, long time no covers! A really good friend of mine died in a freak accident a few weeks ago and it has really taken a toll on my mental health, and so I haven’t been doing much of anything productive over the last month or so ![]()
A lot to catch up on and I’m stoked to listen to all the covers. I have been practicing this song sparingly but really dove into it the last couple of days and am happy with this take. This is probably my favorite Alice In Chains song and it is a really fun one to play. My pinky is so sore from all the slides in this line, and it was challenging trying to remember all the slight variations between each verse & chorus. I tabbed it but there’s great notation all over the internet so I won’t post my transcription.
This song is played with a pick and I am…well, less than efficient, so there’s definitely some tonal differences but I still think it sounds good! Hope you guys enjoy!

Great job on the cover!
Condolences on the loss to you and all loved ones.
That was a great cover!
Sorry to hear about your friend.
Drums look like so much fun! I wanna learn some day, but it would probably cost me my marriage
Great job on a fantastic song.
This is a beautiful bassline and one I haven’t listened to in a while. You did a great job capturing all the goodness of it! I think it works well with fingerstyle. Sorry for the loss of your friend.
Oh man, not bad, I’m usually immune to GAS, but I want this!
I’m currently renting a set of these from my local shop for my daughter! All you can hear is the tapping (while she uses headphones) I’ve tried to rock out a few times and pulled a muscle ![]()
Alesis makes good stuff too.
What a comeback @Ant
This was fantastic!
Very sorry to hear about your friend.
lots more great covers here
@Paul_9207 liked both your covers, I did think the drummer and bassist looked angry at each other thou as there was no eye contact between them for the whole song, probably pissed because they wore the same clothes to the recording
@cheeze_pizza nice work on the 50 songs cover and I liked the spec details and the darkglass pic
@Ant that was great, I thought you got a good tone for the song with your fingers…my condolences to you also
Nice work on the cover @Ant !
Sorry to hear about your friend.

Started working on this one yesterday. Wasn’t expecting to learn it so quickly though! The isolated bass track is really distorted so I had a hard time figuring out exactly what he was playing, especially during the chorus as a lot of the song kind of blends together. I think I have simplified the chorus a bit…there might be some octaves thrown in there but I couldn’t really tell so I played it the way it sounds to me ![]()
Also, I really need to learn to play with a pick cause I am craving that super punchy tone which I just can’t get with my fingers! Added some distortion to the mix but not too heavy. This might be Layne’s best vocal performance outside of Man in the Box.
Alice In Chains.- I Stay Away
Edit: hmmm, it sounded great on my headphones but comes through really subdued on my truck speakers, I’ll mess with the mix this evening and see if I can bring the bass through a little more
Edit 2: Never mind, I uploaded the wrong audio file onto my phone, might need to tone down the bass a bit instead!
sounds great in my office!
Sounds fantastic @Ant !!
Funny story - I started 1:1 lessons and one of my goals was to learn how to play with a pick. The guy says “If you want to learn how to play with a pick - then play with one”. I thought he was being snarky, but, he was right. I went backwards in expectations (pretend you are picking up the bass - no pun intended - for the first time), start slow and easy stuff, maybe redo B2B or some of it, and just remember how you felt when you were first learning how to pluck.
yep, it sucks a ton at first, but that’s where people fail, cause it sounds better just to pluck vs. pick - but its all about just geting comfortable, getting the motor skills trained, and finally doing something about the sloppy muting on your fretting hand

I started playing with a pick sometime within the last year and it does take some getting used to. It’s still easier for my to play with my fingers and if a song is a little more difficult I will learn it with fingers then relearn it with a pick. Just do what @John_E said and start slow with easy songs and you’ll get the hang of it.
I’m also glad I learned finger style first as per Josh’s instructions in the course.
