You’re sounding great @BumbleJazz! Learning songs and sharing them is where its at for making progress IMO. Love that overdrive sound too.
Nice work @BumbleJazz ! Not familiar with the song, but tone sounds great!
Damn, good tone for that song. Are you using overdrive or distortion?
Nicely done! Esp for a first playthrough!!
another excellent job @BumbleJazz
That’s pretty awesome syncing with guitar @BumbleJazz at first I thought you have the drive on your bass but no. That’s great man! By the way you look like Greg Gourdet from TopChef, lol.
Thank you. I’m still learning about effects and pedals but I’ve been using Neural DSP Parallax. I have no space for physical pedals and other equipment. So only the intro is distortion but it’s lower than I liked because of clipping so you can’t really hear it over the original recording.
Thank you. One of the things I’m still figuring out is how to do them in one take but I can’t on Windows without downloading a bunch of other 3rd party apps to use a camera and a daw at the same time and I don’t have the patience to really figure it out lol. But that’s why I picked the songs I’ve shared so far because this is all new territory for me. I was put off for the longest time recording on the computer with tones that didn’t sound quite right and I don’t have the space to use an actual amp.
I did record bass distortion for the intro but it’s lower than I thought so it’s hard to hear over the original. Now that I have a new MacBook I think I’m going to switch over to Logic because I understand how to use it much better than Reaper but I’m learning a lot of information every day.
Well @BumbleJazz you can do it straight from your phone or straight from the camera. I use both, and both ways I record each take live with audio, no syncing. I’ll go through the setting for each.
The cheap is the Rorand Go mixer pro or in my case MoMix. This is a straight hook up with iphone I use with the Ashdown TonePocket just to add a bit of preamp buffer. You can use the Roland camera app or just straight up your app. Go mixer is about $200 and MoMix is about $120. I’d go it’s the MoMix because of the USB-C connector my GO Mixer pro micro usb broke after about 15 hours of use. So I would not recommend that.
My next set up and the one I’m using the most for cover is the Zoom Q8N 4k, it’s pretty awesome when it comes to audio. I can have it setup any way I want it for audio.
1 Mix audio
2 backing track
3 bass track
4 live room audio track( with the XY mic that come with the camera)
Optional I put on the 2 extra XLR input attachment for any additional mix I want to as seen in the picture.
I put it through DI and TonePocket and usually for my covers I just use the mix and not bother with the separate tracks on each video, since I like to edit it with different basses.
Admittedly, the 4k camera is not much to write home about but it’s the only camera with such focus on audio recording quality.
This is my last cover and I use the Zoom Q8N 4k and edit on my iPad Pro on Final Cut Pro iPad. Feel free to send me any questions.
That was smoooth… man! Great playing Al. Very nicely done.
Another great job @BumbleJazz! Really enjoyed that!
Awesome playing @Al1885 i listened to this on the drive home tonight. You certainly executed this with perfection. Fit right in the mix could have sworn you were part of Claptons band! Very nicely done!
50 Songs Challenge Song no. 30: James Brown - Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag
After hearing James talk about “doing the mashed potato” several times, not only did I want a bowl of mashed potatoes but I was also able to learn that it’s an actual dance and there are even YouTube tutorials on how to do it! ![]()
Thanks @JerryP I posted this before lol. But it’s great to have a replay.
Hey thanks @Glenn
When I posted this video a while back I said that I would make a 4 sting version cover. Boy! Time flies, I recorded a few basses and I have one more to record, luckily it’s Thanksgiving break so I’m hoping to finish it.
Keep knockin’ out those challenge songs! Great job Scott!
Thanks Jerry!
Finally I have time to edit and between the grub I managed to do that but, hmmm! in the middle of the song I probably bumped it and the frames shifted by that time I somehow deleted the multicam files so I (thought that it would be easier to work) can have less clutter, I couldn’t go back and fix it, well it’s a second of rookie mistake, lol.
It’s the first time that I tried to display the running tab there’s some issue that I hope to work it out on the next video mainly the syncing of the tempo. Simply put, I just don’t know what I don’t know. Toward the end the song is about 1 measure ahead of the tab. If you need a printed tab just let me know I’ll posted.
This is the affordable basses on the lineup. As you can see they sound just as awesome as the expensive ones. There’s no need to get the expensive bass for great sound. Every knobs are at center detent, there’s no effect added in post and no compressors so every bit of mistake and dynamic you just heard it here.
The song
Change the world live
on 4 string bass
Basses used
Squier 40th Anniversary P bass
Squier '51 P Bass with Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickup
Squier Contemporary P bass
Sterling Short Scale bass with custom fretless neck by Lignum
They are absolute joy to play after a few sessions of setup to dial in the feel and playing position. I also recorded $10k+ worth of 4 string Music Man basses on this song if I listen to them separately, I would not be able to tell the difference except for the tell tale pickup positions. I may edit that video for comparison as well, it might be interesting conversation.
Well here it is, please enjoy and happy thanksgiving everyone.
Nice work Al! I always enjoy your videos.
Hot dang Al! That was some great playing! Really enjoyed that.
