Thanks for the kind words @booker_t I don’t know about feeling it ‘per se’ but I definitely think that deciding to practice every night for the last 2 years with a drum machine has improved my internal sense of time. Whether that then spills over into ‘feel’ I don’t know.
I had a listen to a ‘Pick Up the Pieces’ bass cover. That’s a fantastic bass line, that’s actually quite tricky in parts. Lots of syncopation to throw you off in a few spots. Don’t worry I’m not going to snag that one as well
@dlamson13 yeah the slight change at the end of the riff from a single to double note on each rotation was just enough to give me a timing headache. I learnt the riff, then just sat down with my drum pedal and looped it for hours and hours until it kind of got baked in.
The weird thing is I’d struggle with the timing of something. Work on it late into the night. No dice. A good nights sleep and the next day I could just do it. There’s lots of good science to support the positive effect of good sleep on learning.

I was looking at my Kala U Bass hanging on the wall and thought what would that sound like if I played it into my HX Stomp; through an Ampeg B-15 and then added distortion via Darkglass Electronics Microtubes B7K Ultra and a touch of MXR Flanger.
Want to know? Have a little listen to find out. I mean you might hate it and that’s alright, we can’t all like the same stuff. But we shouldn’t take any of this too seriously I feel. Also get off the sofa and start having fun making covers
I started playing Bass in Nov 2020. Moises.ai app to remove the original bass line and overdub mine.
It mainly sticks to 2 patterns, so not too bad to memorize. Geddy is the master at taking a pattern and varying it continually throughout the song to keep it interesting. My advice for learning Rush songs is focus on how he plays the first verse and first chorus. Then practice playing a “boring” version over the real one, with no variations. Then pick a few of these embellishments to emulate and sprinkle in for some flair. It’s not note for note the way he does it, but I’m okay with that, there is only one Geddy, right?
Thanks @Glenn!
Tone mostly comes from a J-Bass bridge pickup with the treble cranked through a Behringer BDI (which I think is a knock-off Sans Amp?). The black paint on the bass probably helps too Details here: Post your covers! (2023) - #1167 by dlamson13
They feel a little looser than my P Bass GHS precision flats but not like wet spaghetti. They are much more like a real bass string than the rubber strings that Kala use on their other models. I couldn’t get on with those.
@barney : Michael Jackson - Beat it
Very impressive (speed,rhythm, all in its right place ^^), nice cover there ! Plus I had a very good time listening to it.
