Don’t knock “just” playing 8ths. So many fantastic songs have the bass, driving them along, using this approach. The bass underpinning the rest of the orchestration, serving the song. As it does here!
You are right! I didn’t want to sound like a bass snob. I love to play a simple bassline and to stay in the pocket with drums for the whole song.
To play with other people it’s great! I’m having a lot of fun and feel like I’m improving a lot in a short time. I’m glad I finally found the courage to step out
Absolutely true. I think we are all inspired by our peers. @Barney produced some killer covers, @JerryP and @PamPurrs also posted excellent editing covers. My inspiration came from one cover that @John_E made, “True Colors” and his Aerodyne collections. I just love that editing.
Now the next generation of covers are just mind blowing. l definitely love @Paul_9207 and his twins jamming and the AHA inspired @sunDOG videos.
Getting Nostalgic with all this songs from the 80s and 90s.
Song Love Shack by B-52
Basses
Warwick Corvette $$ Masterbuilt
Warwick Katana NeckThrough
Warwick Leland Sklar Signature StarBass. Producer switch on #1 position.
Fender reissue ‘75 Jazz bass.
This one was a fun project with ‘76 body and new take off 2001 ‘75 reissue neck with awesome Fralin pickups. It can be so angry if and when you want it to.
sound wise I like the Corvette in this context. fat yet percussive. In another context I would have prefered the Leland Sklar signature, fat but really perfectly balanced.
Also I really like B52.
and, spoiler, I have a Fralin on order for Greenie
Thanks @terb
All but the StarBass can be very angry. The Masterbuilt I opted to follow Sonny T sting gauge of choice. He plays very light strings. It works well on this one.
Sorry for all the fluctuating brightness on this one. I had some problems with my phone camera. I took a page out of the @sunDOG playbook and called in my 10 yo daughter to salvage it with some editing. She came up with the clever idea to use the lightening effect when the lights dimmed. I think it fits the moody dark feel of the song really well! Man these kids are smart
Anyway, Jeff Ament has a lot of nice fretless work all over 10, definitely a big inspiration. Thanks for checking it out!
It’s good fun getting daughters involved! I’ve tried to persuade mine to take up bass too, but she says she’s already got too much with piano and singing!
Thanks @sunDOG! That’s funny I was just talking with her today about learning the bass. She said something to the effect of “no one pays any attention to the bass” she’d rather learn guitar, keyboard, or sing. Meanwhile “Under Pressure” was playing on the radio in the background, and she said “Well, except for this song, this song would be nothing without bass” Proud Dad moment.
Nice. Those were tied for my second favorite (which is not an insult; the top two were the DiMarzio Model P at #1 (this kind of sound will always be me), and the Bareknuckle '58 tied at #2 with the Fralin, so elite company )
The Fralin and the Bareknuckle sounded pretty different IIRC.
