I still love the DP122 and I consider it’s really one of the best PB pickups out there. It was perfect when I played post-rock/post-metal/doom in my last band. But now I need something a bit more versatile. The DP122 always sounds good, even for old country stuff, but the midrange and the output level can be a bit overhelming and hard to manage sometimes.
About the Fralin and the Bareknuckle, both are excellent in my opinion but I prefer the Fralin for its clarity.
Anyway I will keep the DiMarzio, I have absolutly no plan to sell it. This pickup will rock again for sure, sooner or later.
Yup completely understood, it would not be my pick for subtle.
Yeah. IIRC the Bareknuckle was more scooped, like what a much better version of the Quarter Pounder would be. Sounded great but distinctive. The Fralin was more balanced and rounded.
(That sounded harsh. The QP is not bad, just not my choice for tone.)
Actually I agree, I’m not a big fan of the QP. Not a bad pickup but it’s a bit overrated I think.
Yeah the Fralin is very well balanced, that’s what I was looking for really. And also the clarity that is Fralin’s trademark.
Bareknuckle is more into the meaty thing.
I’ve had a '93 Les Paul Standard and I changed the original pickups (not excellents) for a Bareknuckle “The Mule” set at the time. Those pickups were incredible. I still have a Bareknuckle Warpig P90 on a SG (not the blue one), very raw pickup, it’s a tone monster for all the stoner/doom things, at least if you like those very big single coils.
Oh cool. The dual P90 huge Les Paul sound is probably my second favorite guitar tone behind humbuckers. It’s like the only single coil sound I truly love. Though I have to admit I was starting to love the tele bridge pickup (obviously for different reasons, just because it’s so different.)
P90’s are very special pickups, not very easy to use actually but yeah there is this distinctive agressive punchy raw sound.
Soundwise I prefer SG’s over LP’s because the neck pickup is not at the same place, and I prefer the SG neck pickup position which makes it sound less rounded than on a LP. Also the woods on a SG and a LP are different (maple top on a LP, only mahogany on a SG, and the thicknesses are very different) which makes them vibrate very differently, and I prefer the SG vibe. Both a good LP and a good SG can be very very resonnant, but in a different way. And also the Gibson P90’s are quite weak but there are tons of good aftermarket pickups.
My favorite LP is the Deluxe one, with the original Epiphone mini-HB. At the time, Gibson used this model to sell the stock of Epiphone pickups when they just bought the Epiphone brand (it was a high end brand at the time). And those particular pickups are stellar.
(note that those mini-HB, with the added ring, are the exact same size than soapbar P90’s)
Oh yeah - I am 100% not a fan of LP’s for me, I simply hate the feel. But I love the look, love the pickup options, and yet they just do not fit me at all. Plus they are heavy like boat anchors.
SG’s look and feel good to me. Need to replace the humbuckers though, the Gibsons are not good. P90 would be way better there too in a dual P90, yeah.
Yeah, the only issue with the SG is a crazy neck dive because of the very thin and lightweight body, but it’s not really a problem for me. But yeah the SG is an updated design, compared to the LP. At the time it was created to replace the LP, but they finally kept both designs (which is a good thing).
Despite practicing, I still managed to get significant elements of this cover wrong. Matters weren’t helped by my daughter, pulling faces and taking the pi55…
The song is iconic, the epitome of stadium rock … we searched out a stadium
So, here it is, all the way from the Swanage Stadium, in Dorset, England, I give you Queen’s We Will Rock You!
Been away for a little while, as I told you guys a few weeks ago my wife was dealing with some unexpected heart troubles but things are looking good and she should be just fine. I appreciate your guys well wishes
Haven’t had much time to catch up on the covers I missed yet, I’m a few hundred posts behind at the moment
I haven’t so much as touched my bass in a couple of weeks but finally had the time and motivation last night to learn a song I’ve been wanting to do for a while. I’m not sure what effects were used on the original, sounds like distortion/overdrive/wah? Hard to say. I added some compression & overdrive and the slightest bit of chorus. Crazy to think this album came out the year I was born. What an amazing record. Really enjoyed playing this one, hope you guys like it!
