Post your covers! (2024)

Thanks Ed! The Ibanez is the only choice when I’m working in Hawaii. I spend a lot of time here due to work so three years ago I bought this in a local Honolulu music store and I keep it here…

@Morkai is absolutely correct. It is a Katana Go connected by USB that I used for playback. I don’t have all my gear here for recording so I make due with what I have. I used OBS Studio to record the video. I’ve noticed that there is a slight latency when using these devices.

Good idea @JerryP - I too shall keep basses in New York, London and Paris for when I am on business trips

I love this version of this song. I got the bass in one take after spending a couple weeks learning it. It’s really fun to play and I have enjoyed learning it. Took me about six on the drums before I called it a day. I really didn’t stick the ending at all, I think I had better takes too, but this in the one we got. I look super cranky, but I promise I was having fun.

Great job dude! I’m looking forward to the 3 piece cover of you doing Popular now that you’ve got a 6 string. You look super comfortable moving around the fretboard and all I saw was some locked in bass face, you don’t look angry.

That’s excellent! Well done!!

I think I’m gonna add this to my ever lengthening list of songs I need to have a go at!! (Please take this as a compliment!)

This one is a little bit different. The song is an acoustic version of Billy Idol’s wonderful Bitter Taste.

While the song is about a motorcycle accident Idol had in the 90s, it evoked memories of long, hard days in the saddle (cycling), and specifically Everesting. Everesting is stupid. Basically, you ride up and down the same hill until you have accumulated the height of Everest, 8,848m. Officially (i.e. recognised in the Everesting Hall of Fame) I’ve done it 3 times, twice on the road and once virtually. Unofficially, I’ve done it 4 times, but the 4th (another virtual) was not recognised as the app crashed at the end of the ride and didn’t save the event file. Cue lots of swearing!!

Anyway, these rides are loooong. The video is a montage of photographs from the Everesting of a hill in Wales - a 21 hour ride. The photos run out at about 2/3 way through, as you eventually end up too potatoed to care about anything else other than the next rep.

I’ve not included a video of me playing the baseline, or cartoonified the video. The countryside is too beautiful for that.

For the bass cover itself, I played the Ibanez EHB1000S. Laying the bass line down was actually quite difficult as the base track is just Billy Idol’s vocal and Steve Stephens on guitar. The timing slightly wonders, especially at the start of verse two; trying to stay in time is hard. So there are a few, slightly mistimed notes, but ho humm…

Sorry for the long post

Thank you! The guitar is proving to be frustrating, I have to keep reminding myself that it is a new instrument.

Thank you!

Of course! I hope it came across as a fun bass line.

Hey @401Blues nice work on the song.

My only critical observation is your posture. I have a bad back (compressed vertebrae from an accident) so I’m really conscious of this.

Maybe try to play with a straighter back and not hunched over looking at the fret board. It takes time to get used to playing not looking at the fret board but with practice, it’s achievable. I often practice with my eyes closed to get used to feel of intervals under my fingers. It’ll be more comfortable in the long run i think.
Cheers

Sounds great! I forgot I was listening to a cover.

As someone who has dabbled in cycling and has also weighed over 230 lbs (100kg) for most of my adult life… Those rides sound horrible. Good job though!

I’m not sure what’s more impressive, the cover or the incredibly seamless video overlay.

Great job

Thank you, @JerryP!

Thanks @Paul_9207! There is certainly something masochistic about sitting on the bike for 21 hours, riding up and down the same hill! It’s also incredibly satisfying!! …weight, yes that’s the enemy!!!

Thanks, @saroohoo!!! The countryside made that video easy!!

Thanks, @Al1885! Riding is very much my first love!

It totally sounds like something friends convince each other to do but no one really wants to, and everyone is low key pissed that the others agreed to do it too because you were kinda joking
