Don’t underestimate how difficult slow songs with sparse basslines can be. Timing is way more difficult than chugging ,and you have to fight the temptation to over elaborate (honestly, you can see the veins standing out my my forehead when I’m playing a slow line)
I heard the bass cover on the Geordie Bassist’s channel and I thought “Ed, that is the cover for you!” It is an interesting contrast, despite the song being in the key of D minor (the saddest of keys) and the singer narrating his woes, he sounds content with his lot.
The bassline doesn’t seem that tough at first glance but keeping the quarter notes consistent at that pace was actually a bit tricky. Call me Gorbachev because I be rushing lol
Anyway, I really got into this one while I was playing it, even though I had a couple of blank moments while recording the video…
Oh - the backing track faded out a couple of times. Grrr. Blame Moises for that one - wasn’t me, guv!
Special thanks to The Geordie Bassist on Youtube for the transcription
You’re welcome bud! Things with the band were going good. we were learning the material and shooting for playing live after the new year! We had a major setback with this hurricane though. Our drummer lives in lake lure. Him and his wife both lost their jobs from the destruction Helene caused. Tree fell on their house. No power for weeks maybe they are told. Not sure what they will do now. Practice is on hold for awhile. The guitarist is also near that area but only lost power. No damage to property or job loss. Major kink in the hose, so fingers crossed it will work itself out soon. Thank you for asking brother.
Very sorry to hear about your trials and tribulations regarding the aftermath of the hurricane. I hope your bandmates get back on their feet and you all get back to jamming again.
I think the original bass on the recording was a Precision but I thought the Hofner sounds more 60s If you push up the bridge pickup, it’s actually very good at cutting into the mix, even with flats.
I think my task for the month will be to work with slower songs, dig the metronome out and sort out my timing…
