Guys, it’s been a dog of a week, and with the anniversary of Martin Eric Ain’s death approaching, I thought I would crack open the Celtic Frost for a cover.

So today I present Circle of the Tyrants by Celtic Frost. In case you don’t know them, Frost were a hugely influential Swiss avant garde metal band from the 80s and 90s, who I blame for most of the weird Scandinavian metal you get nowadays.

The bassline isn’t that tricky but you need to play with attitude and you need some stamina in your picking hand. Maybe you can play it fingerstyle if you have massive great meaty sausages for fingers hanging off your wrists but mortals like me need a pick. You may notice I only breathe about three times in the whole video - It’s that full on

You might also notice I’m playing the Hofner. In this I was inspired by @JustinAndSheba and his experiments into metal with his Steinberger. Although admittedly my Thunderbird gave a lot more bite in the mix when I tried it, the Hofner didn’t do too bad. Conclusion - you can indeed play any song with any bass!

No real processing - only the Modern setting on the Line 6 and some overdrive.

Nice job @AndreaJayne - the mix was just right :+1:

Yeah! Usually not my kind of sound, but anything straight “in die Fresse!” (“in yer face!”) always gets me!
My girlfriend and me were headbanging on the sofa … this is what our Rock’n Roll life style came to

PS Great sound from that bass!

Thanks! Now and again it’s really therapeutic to play something that grabs you right at the beginning and doesn’t let go

The Hof really gives out a serious bottom end. I may well consider purchasing anothet semihollow for Christmas…

Wow, that’s heavy!!! Great playing. I was playing along, finger style, could I keep up…. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Hey, regarding SOR, they let us pick our own tunes which is a bit of a struggle with 6 people who don’t know each other. So, no real theme. I know most of the SOR do themes, but guess this one doesn’t. I do look forward to practice every week.

Ha! Thanks @Nebel  :metal: Old Frost is the most metallist metal you can get

Intense workout there, Ed! It’s not a song I’m familiar with, but I can appreciate the emotion in the performance. Hofner sound great as usual.

I enjoy most of Tom G’s work. Tryptikon is great as well, but of course the old stuff is more trüe metal…

Nice job on the up and down picking, I cannot get that to work! Thankfully I have the aforementioned sausage fingers!
You can’t beat some hard and heavy stuff to get the pulse beating, and thrash out some aggression. Well played

The Hofner sounds great here. I’ve always like Celtic Frost a lot, too. I remember learning “Into the Crypts of Rays” a few years back. Awesome job, man!!

Okay. Less than 3 months of playing. Going to bite the bullet and share some very in-progress video for critique.

First is me playing “Oye Como Va”. Was trying to go harder when the dynamics get louder near the end. Think I went a bit too far in the final section just before the end.

(Not sure if I’m embedding videos correctly.)
