Post your covers! (2024)

Well tonight’s cover (Heart Breaker - Pat Benitar) was pretty much an accident. I was recording to just watch myself and then my last take of the song (which isn’t actually the video) sounded interesting enough I thought why not. Then my Reaper problems made me almost delete it, but then I saw @howard post on normalizing levels in Reaper THANK YOU! I feel like I just got cured from an illness.

The camera isn’t in frame so I added a video effect . I’m pretty sure I’m in my PJs…

Anyway, this one is far from perfect but I wanted to share it because this is the song first time after only tonight’s practice.

It’s way far from perfect but I didn’t get serious with Bass until about October this year and the fact that my timing was alright for some of this after one night made me happy. So I thought I’d share.

(I’m open to all feedback no hard feelings so feel free)

Jimmy Summerville - Small Town Boy (Reprise) bass improvisation

This version of the song has no bass, just Jimmy Somerville’s haunting vocal and a piano; forgive me for trying to add to its beauty.

Sire v7 Fretless into an Ampero One, then on into GarageBand

Comments welcome  BTW, I took onboard a comment made about a similar cover / improv I did about slightly varying the baseline.

Edit: a friend’s dog, watching this cover

Great cover! I had not heard this version.

I have always loved the original version of this song (Bronski Beat). Sommerville is a fantastic vocalist.

The Hollies - possibly one of the most underrated bands of the 60s and 70s. Best known in America for ‘Long cool woman in a black dress’. Today I present their classic “He ain’t heavy , he’s my brother”.

This is one of those songs which I never really noticed until I started listening to the bassline. It’s not that difficult, but the composition is so good that it feels like you’re going on a bit of a journey when you play it

The bass of choice was the Hofner - it’s so good that only some compression was needed to bring the level up.

Awesome job Ed! I always loved this song from the day it came out. Question: How did you set the switches on the Hofner?

Thanks @howard

Heh - nice eh? It came with the spare tyre

Hah I thought I felt something  - thanks @TheMadBassist :+1:

thanks @JerryP I used to think it was ok but I didn’t really get into it before I started learning the bassline. Maybe because I was always listening on little radio speakers?
Switches all on with solo; the bridge pickup is a little backed off because I’m getting a weird echo somtimes…

Love some Nirvana! Sounds great man and the alternate picking is where it’s at! Solid cover. What picks are you using if I can ask?

Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz.
My first upload in a while as I really don’t ‘Feel Good’.
I’m glad I made the effort though, and got a first proper use out of my ‘green screen’

Thanks for that @TheMadBassist yeah I am really liking alternate picking these days…I use dunlop max grip (.88 suits me)…they are grippy alright they don’t feel ‘smooth’ to hold but I have never dropped a pick

Cool cool. :sunglasses: you’re welcome man, yea I use a ton of downstrokes myself, but I do use alternate picking as well when I need to. Depends on the song. I have some of those .88’s too, also the 1.00 mm as well. Max grips are great picks. I mostly use Tortex .73 triangles now. I’ve latched onto those. There’s a company called intuneGP that makes custom picks. I just ordered some of them and expect them next month sometime.
