After the honeymoon with my Warwick was over, I liked it, but wanted to love it and just didn’t. I swapped in some D’Addario Nickelwound strings in place of the Warwick Red stainless steel strings. Immediate improvement in tone and playability for me. Made it super fun to play and I wanted to rock out. Tuned down to DGCF.
Greta song Barney…I also only use the Ampeg SGT-DI for a bit of tone shaping for my covers… Although I am liking the Aguilar AG and Aguilar AGRO combination
Part of the fun with this one was producing the audio!
I first used the doubling technique which @howard and @sunDOG were discussing in one of these threads recently. I just shifted one track by 1ms and then split them out wide left and right.
I then did some neat stuff with sends in Reaper that I picked up from a video on YT. Basically the doubled tracks are combined and sent to two new tracks. One of these new tracks is EQ’d only for the lowend. The other is EQ’d for the higher end and that’s where the distortion is applied. The technique calls for a third track to get super distorted for metal, but I didn’t think it was needed here. I really like how it turned out personally.
You’re probably right that it is a bit too bass-forward. I was also experimenting with a pick for the first time, having hurt a finger, playing a couple of days earlier. The pick gives a more aggressive attack, which I was digging, but which doesn’t really fit with a more mellow, acoustic version of the song. Damn, when my finger is fully recovered, I’m going to have to do version three, finger style
I didn’t realize I was so behind in this thread! I just want to say wow,we have a lot of talented bassers who have really excelled and have honed in on their craft. Nice job everyone who has posted covers this year. I have never seen so many pop up at one time.
You’re the man @Barney thanks for taking the time to pull this one off, I really appreciate this. I definitely need an upgrade on the pickups. The original ones I find very hot and although they sound good they seem a bit much in the p department compared to the j. Great job on the song, it sounded fantastic and you played it so effortlessly. Thanks again for doing this!
There’s a lot more to this band than just “I Got a Line on You,” but I don’t feel like they ever received the recognition they deserved. I’ve always really liked this cut with a great bass line by Mark Andes, who also worked with Canned Heat, Heart, and Firefall among many others.
Oh I definitely understand! To me he’s one of those guys whose music is so awful that’s it’s almost good in a sick way…lol. At least you can always drive unwanted guests out of your home by playing some VVI.
