Post your covers! (2025)

I have the week off work, so am spending my morning walking, to get some much needed exercise and enjoy the good weather. Then the afternoons are for finishing off songs that I’ve been learning, but have yet to record.
So here is one that has been ‘nearly learnt’ for a few weeks;
The World Is Not Enough - Garbage
I love a good Bond theme

Are you gonna be my girl - Jet

One of the best films of recent years IMO was Inception - where the hero could enter a dream within a dream within a dream. I too recently fell into such a Nolaneseque trap, working on a cover within a cover, within a cover. Thankfully, I have finally managed to escape the bottom layer by finishing my cover of Are you gonna be my girl by Jet.

It is indeed true that time passes more slowly at the lower levels of the subconscious - I spent literally hours trying to crack the intro section. Guys you probably know I am not much of a perfectionist but this was honestly driving me up the wall. The timing is a kind of swing beat off the high hat (not the drums), and for some reason the bassist comes in just after the 6th beat. And the singer coughs to put you off. Aargh.

So with a little bit of cheating on Reaper, I finally managed to get a workable version of the intro and escaped to the next level, considerably older (and I hope wiser)

Otherwise it was quite straightforward - just the Jack Casady, the Line 6 reound sim and some compression.

I admire your dedication, and song choice. I think we all get songs that are hard to get the rhythm of, but once you crack it, it’s like cracking the Enigma machine!
What program (or app for the youngsters) are you recording into that we can see on the PC? I’m just nosey
Top job on the cover, it sounded spot on.

Well, “IF” you’re “NOT a PERFECTIONIST”,…. Then why was this cover so…… Damn Dude???... You NAILED it Ed…. Think I’ll go back and retake B2B and learn how to use a pick!!:rofl:

Keep on Thumpin’!

Great cover Duncan!! I too have an old Squire Affinity that I picked up back in 2005 for $60 that I still play today. Done several covers with it, and after new electronics, pups, and tuners, that bass is my all round “Battle-Ax”…. I did paint the head to match the body, and had custom stickers made for the headstock. No one ever knows that it’s nothing more than an inexpensive Squire Affinity.

Sounds great, Duncan! Chugging along!

Enjoyed that one, Andrea! One of the few songs by Garbage I know (thanks to that Pierce Brosnan & Maria Grazia Cucinotta opening boat chase scene on the Thames)!

Nice job, Ed! The pain of working through the intro was worth it. I love the look and sound of that bass by the way!

Hah Thanks Andrea! I usually use Audacity (because it’s simpler - and free) but I needed a good ‘count in’ on the metronome so I dug out Reaper. It’s worth getting a copy - there is a free fully-functional version, but like all guiltware, you eventually give in and pay for it  . Not expensive, and it has tons of features - most of which I don’t have a clue about…

Thanks John!

Oh I love that old style of bass - when I was thinking of getting one I was trying to decide between a Guild, a Hofner Verythin and a Jack Casady, and the Jack just had the edge. I wasn’t so keen on the pickup cover but I’ve kind of got used to it

The tone is really nice but the size can be a bit impractical - it can be tough to play sitting down and I’ll probably need a specialised case or gig bag but it’s worth it

Oh I think the original bassist in Jet uses on in the video btw but I’m not sure how he gets his tone. It’s a lot more thumpy - maybe flats?

@JohnF Thanks John, I’ll have to watch the DVD again, I can’t remember it too much. Thankfully, I have the boxset
@Ed I have both Reaper and Audacity already, and tend to use Reaper more nowadays as I think the recording quality is marginally better. I’ll have to look up the metronome though, I didn’t know that was in there.

Oops sorry I get so facinated by the tech here I forget most people have it  As far as I remember you go to Options - Metronome and there are some options in the box to count in when recording, how many bars etc.

Still prefer Audacity

Nice one, thanks Ed. Audacity is great for ‘one click’ recording, I do like the simplicity

Been a bit since I’ve posted. I’ve been working my way through B2B so I’ve taken a step back from recording, but CoverSolutions had to go and put out one of my favorite LZ tunes, so I couldn’t help myself when it came taking a stab at this one.
Kind of threw me back into the loop of obsessing over recording/mixing and trying to NAIL THAT SOUND which is definitely a love-hate pursuit. Always open to feedback.

That sounded great. Not a tune I’ve heard before, the only Led Zeppelin album I have is Remasters from 1990. Also liking the bass and the colour co-ordination

Perfect @Ed and perfect bass for the job!

Never posted a cover, but I want to post one to pay tribute to the help Josh gave me getting my start on bass. Josh if you read this, you were an inspiration to get started on bass. Two and a half years later I have been playing at local bars with School of Rock and loving every minute I play! Here’s one of my favorites from a recent set.
