What bass is it? This cover sounded very good, hopefully the new bass will encourage you to record a bit more
@sunDOG Chillin out on the bed, best thing to do if you have needles and pins Great cover Mr D
@JohnF Thanks John, I had ten days off work, including the Bank Holiday Monday, so plenty of time to get used to the Jackson, and knock out a few covers
And @AndreaJayne That bass is the Reverend Wattplower Mk 1. I have the Mk 2 with an extra blade pickup in the reverse P position and the Thumpbucker neck pickup.
Thank you and yep. It’s the Mk I, which is just a short scale P bass more or less. The Mk II has the 3 single coil pickups and the mudbucker on the neck.
Thank you, and I probably should. It isn’t lack of motivation to play at all. Tbh, I’ve been more motivated to play the past couple months than I had been for awhile. I’ve just been working on other things besides playing covers. I should really dig into one though where I can show off the work I’ve been putting in.
Have you played a MK I? I was leary about that mudbucker, but the 3 P pickups were really tempting. I’d be interested to hear how they compare by someone that’s put hands on both? As is, with the SS rounds on it, it’s damn near unplayable with the tone all the way up. It’s just too aggressive imo.
Nice! Love this song in particular, but that whole In Rainbows from the basement album is absolutely spectacular! Great job on the cover, love the Watt plower!
Thanks, I wish I’d worked on it a bit more. I had only pulled it up on Monday night but I wanted to get anything recorded with the new bass. That might have been the 5th or 6th time I’d played it. I needed to clean up some timing stuff and I should have turned off the harmonizer going into the break at the end.
Well the painters are behind a day, so that means I get a much needed day off. Been listening to a lot of early 2000’s stuff recently, and this song sounded like one I could learn today. Pretty simple but fun to play!
I can see what @John_E was talking about. I think more than anything this song has a unison guitar line that really totally interfere with the bass line by adding the same note to the upper mid. It pushes the bass tone to the back so the upper mids really take over the lower mids in this case. I do get plenty of punch in my ears. That’s the fun of the era mixing. I’m ok with it. way way way better than what we have nowadays.
I haven’t played a Mk 1, but I assume that it’s equivalent to the Mk 2 with the pickup switch in the middle position (1=reverse P, 2=P, 3=neck). “Too aggressive”=Mike Watt! But, yeah, I put a set of Slinky cobalt flats on mine.
Oh absolutely. It’s his signature bass. That’s why I don’t see it as a flaw. It came with SIT SS rounds on it… so the brightest, most aggressive sounding strings I’ve bumped in to so far. I’m thinking about TIs for this one, I’m leaning towards rounds since they’re nickel. I still want some of the growl in there.
I hope they’re cheaper and easier to find in the States. A 4-string set of 32" short scale TI Jazz flats cost 66 € ($74) here in the EU, but the Jazz rounds cost 82 € ($92) when I checked yesterday (thanks to @Whying_Dutchman for the links). Thomann doesn’t even carry the rounds, probably due to insufficient demand.
You might want to check out the GHS Balanced Nickels. I’ve heard good things about them.
GHS pressurewounds are my default choice for strings in most cases. They retain enough of the zing of rounds with the thump of flats. I’ve just been wanting to check out TIs for a bit and this bass seems worth the cost. So far, the best price I’ve found them for is about $90 USD.
@John_E @Al1885
This cover was a bit of an experiment playing with the Boss EQ pedal. I turned down the lows and bumped up the mids and I kinda liked the tone and went with it.
Thanks for the constructive input! I appreciate it.
