Post your covers! (2025)

Have always loved this song, great cover @JerryP !

(Not selling the whole “on a Winter’s day” thing with Hawaii in the background though just sayin’… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: )

Was away on vacation and didn’t take the bass…went through bass withdrawal syndrome. Have a week of “Post your covers!” to catch up on…here we go…

Well played, BumbleJazz! That part around 3:40 was impressive!

Nice one, Vader! Sounded great! First take? I won’t even tell you how many takes some of my vids have required.

Well played, Duncan! Yes, a must-learn bass line for all bassists. Where did the Tropical Sessions take place? Diggin’ the palm trees swaying in the background.

Cake bass lines are awesome and have been a major challenge for me. I was learning Long Line of Cars and The Distance for a while and haven’t gotten the timing right on either of them. That is a tough bass line you were playing and I’m sure that was excellent practice tackling that one.

Great song…enjoyed that one, Andrea! Cool background! Rockin’ the Bass Buzz tank top!

Yeah, Travis! Can’t sit still with that song!

Cool addition to the set list! Well played! You get any new followers from playing outside like that (must be a good conversation starter)?

That was an interesting bass line…nicely done, Andrea! Enjoyed it!

When we do family karaoke, this is our go-to song. Sounded great! Yeah, I don’t think you have to do any California dreamin’ with all those palm trees around you!

Dwight Yoakam - Long White Cadillac

In addition to being a ton of fun to play, this song has an interesting backstory. It was originally recorded by The Blasters. It was written by Dave Alvin (from The Blasters) and is about the death of Hank Williams who died in the back seat of his long white Cadillac while being driven to a gig on New Year’s Day 1953.

Dwight Yoakam called Alvin on the phone and told him he was covering the song as a single added to his 1989 greatest hits album (Just Lookin’ for a Hit) and invited Alvin to the studio to listen to the cover. Alvin entered the studio expecting to hear a modern country-radio version of Long White Cadillac. "I thought, I’m gonna buy a yacht!” he said. But when he heard Dwight’s recording, his hopes dimmed. “It was long, hard-rocking, neo-psychedelic… I was like, ‘Man, can’t you put some pedal steel and fiddles on it?’ Dwight being Dwight said, ‘F*** country radio!’ I was like, ‘No, no, no, not with my song. Make them like my song.’”

“It did really well, and it got me out of debt,” Alvin said. “I’m thankful for that.”

Thanks Jerry!
Bought my first car in 1965 at 15… '54 Chevy with a ‘53, 6-cylinder, 3-barrel Corvette engine, aftermarket headers, and Bel Air floor shift for $400.00… a year before being able to legally drive ("We don’t need no stickin’ license"). I would drive up and down our driveway with headers wide open listening to AM radio. As soon as I heard ‘California Dreamin’ I knew my Chevy and me would be heading to CA as soon as I had enough money for gas. Had to wait three years and high school graduation to make it happen. Thanks for the memories of a very special time.

That’s All Right - ELVIS

Experiments in tone…. I was intrigued by @Whying_Dutchman’s post where he was looking for a plugin to replicate an upright bass tone from a normal electric bass guitar. Surely it’s all in the fingers and EQing, I thought…?

Anyway, here’s an attempt to get an upright tone from the most unpromising of basses, my crappy Hohner Shorty. This bass has a single humbucker, more or less rammed against the bridge. So…I rolled off the tone, played with my thumb up the neck (as in over the fretboard) and then EQ’ed for bass in GarageBand. It’s an easy song, root and 5th, so this was one take after playing through a couple of times. I think I got the tone I was after…

Thoughts?

Thank you John. I hope you had a good vacation.

What a great story behind the song, well played John, I’ve actually got this on my Songsterr list, although I’ve not got around to it yet.

That sounded great Jerry, and I love the scenery. This song is just such an iconic tune.
@gottaplay What a great memory. I think this song makes everyone want to jump in Chevy and drive to California! I’m a big fan of American cars from around 67-73. My dream car is a '69 Dodge Challenger, but I’d be happy with a Chevy Nova or Chevelle
@sunDOG I read somewhere (or watched a video) that upright bass tone can be achieved in the way you slide up to a note, rather than by accurate fretting, or a plug in. I tried to replicate this on the fretless with Feeling Good by Muse.
Good job on the cover. I have a low tolerance for Elvis, but that song wasn’t so bad

Thanks for taking the time to listen to this cover, Travis! Yeah, Slingblade was an excellent movie and Dwight was fantastic… “We don’t got no band! We don’t need to practice, Randy!”

Thanks, Andrea! That is cool that you have this one saved on Songsterr…looking forward to hearing your cover! Definitely a fun one to play. Curious to hear how the Songsterr transcription is on this one as I transcribed this one myself (and took some liberties on that instrumental solo to not play it exactly as the studio version).

Thanks, Jerry! I enjoyed spending time with this song.
