Norwegian Wood - Jackie Mittoo

Another classic insturmental SKA song

Jackie Mittoo’s “Norwegian Wood” is built on the Darker Shade of Black riddim. This riddim, originally crafted by Mittoo and The Soul Vendors in 1967, became a foundation for many reggae and dancehall tracks over the years

Been slacking on my covers lately. I decided lo-fi was the way to go and just recorded with my iPad. I’m playing along to a YouTube cover and this one is new to me as of this week so excuse my flying fingers :fairy:

We are playing a car show next month so I have 11 throwbacks to learn quickly.

“Can you hold down a simple baseline for 3 minutes?”. This is a great question and a great song to practice this on. It’s simple but dynamics, timing, and consistency are the name of the game here. Don’t let your brain wander!

Been a looooong week, so playing a bit of catch-up!

Well played, John!!

Some new Alice!!! Great tone from that bass, @Ed!

That’s a pretty cool line, @Ant. Well played!

Well done on your first bass cover, @justarookie! I trust you are enjoying the the dark side that is bass!! :metal:

This song has such a cool vide, @JerryP! Well played, sir!!

Cool!! Wolfmother are very good, aren’t they? Well played, @groaner!

Also well played, @groaner. Three recordings in one session is going some!!

Well played! And chapeau for playing on an acoustic!!

Absolutely, and well played!!

I felt a thousand miles from nowhere, this week!! Well played, John!!

Very well played, @401Blues, can’t beat a bit of ska / reggae!

Hell yeah, a bit of Judas Priest on a Steinberger! :metal: They do have excellent tone, don’t they? Well played, @JustinAndSheba!

That’s a bit mellow for you, brother, but I love the reference !! Well played, Travis!!

This IS a song from my yoof!! Brings back memories of the school ‘youth club’ on Friday nights, trying to learn to skank! Well played, Andrea!

Can’t beat ridin’ the root, genuinely, these are my favourite types of bass lines to play!! Love it Travis!!

More ska? Yes please!! Well played, @401Blues (BTW, you’re gonna have to change your name to 401Ska!!)

Similar, prepping for a dep-role, immediately followed by my band on stage, so having to make sure I know both our set list and the other band’s. Holding down a simple line for three of four minutes can be surprisingly hard. One I have needed to learn is Teenager in Love. Simple, repetitive, and surprisingly easy to let your mind wander off and bam, you’re lost!!

Well played, @MattyD!

Oasis - Don’t Look Back In Anger bass cover

Yep, another song from my dep-gig preparation, this time it’s the Oasis song, Don’t Look Back In Anger. This one has proven to be a bit of a challenge as the song is at a tuning of A451Hz, not 440Hz. Luckily, I managed to find a version at A440, meaning I don’t have retune the bass. Clearly for the dep-gig, I’ll be playing in standard tuning as well…or at least, I hope I will be

This is a great song…well played…very smooth! I had practiced this song last year and wasn’t aware of the tuning issue. That opening piano sure was “influenced” by the song Imagine.

Great cover brother J!

Thanks John! Yea listening to the tone it almost sounds like an upright bass. I have the bass way up on the guitar and I was trying to play more up the neck. I played around with playing thumb but it needs a little high end in there.

That sounded great Duncan. I was browsing elsewhere while listening to it, and totally forgot it was a cover. Then it dawned on me that it is the only reason I’d be listening to Oasis
