I can see why! It was really fun to listen to as well, the way you go up and down the different octaves, it carries the song so nicely.
I grew up in the DC metro and these guys were gods when I was a teenager. Every local band tried to be them. This has been my favorite Fugazi song for 30 years (fk this has been out for 30 years). It isn’t one of his harder bass lines but Joe Lally is a badass. It’s a blast to do. My struggle with this one was dialing back and keeping in time with the song. I wanted to go another 10 bpm every time I played it.
Fugazi - By You
nice job! I have a tendency to play faster too. you did great
OK, not familiar with that song, but your playing was great!
Not familiar with the band, the genre, or the song, but you looked like you enjoyed playing it…. Gotta say I was a bit confused with it all and at the end when you took your bass off I thought to myself… “He’s gonna slam the damn thing up against the wall!!!”…. However when you just walked away after setting your bass down on the stand while the kinda “shrieking sound” kept going on I thought…. “The damn bass is gonna blow up!!!”…. Obviously none of that took place………… Nice Job…
This is definitely my favorite song I’ve learned so far. I’ve been trying to reach this level since I started playing bass and play at this level consistently.
This song came out about a week ago and it’s an early contender for my song of the year and I’m pretty happy that I’m relying more on my ear than tabs (still have some work to do with figuring out tuning though) because I really wanted to learn this because of the sick breakdown lol. I LOVE a good slide and bend :arrow_up_down:. I love 5 string basses, I just love the bass in general.
Thornhill - Silver Swarm
Another solid cover @BumbleJazz ! that Dingwall is the perfect tool for the job.
And congrats on learning the song so quickly! We should have some sort of contest here to see who can get the fastest cover done when a song comes out
That’s a great tone! And being able to learn songs by ear is so liberating. You actually play what you hear instead of someone elses interpretation of the song. well done!
Thank you both. Fugazi is a post hardcore band from the late 80s / 90s. Not musically, but in terms of where they sit in the bigger music picture, they kind of hold my generations place that The Velvet Underground sits in for older generations. They never got big but a whole lot of bands that came after them (most of the bands in the 90s / 00s) all take inspiration directly from Fugazi. You’d see a lot of Fugazi stickers on Grunge bands guitars back in the day.
The main singer was in one of the 2nd wave punk bands in the early 80s (Minor Threat) and was one of the big proponents for kicking off the whole straightedge movement. If you’ve ever heard Fugazi before, it probably would have been the song below.
Like most commenting … I’ve never heard of this before. Really like it tho… Is this song in line with their signature sound/style? Just curious because there is always outliers
The tension and dissonance really set the mood in this song… Love it!
Great job! (even though I don’t know it…) and thanks for the introduction to them
Damn @BumbleJazz this tune just kicks! Smokin good job!
I love the control you are showing killin (muting) notes precisely in time with the groove… and that tone… as always!
Killin it!
Nailing down one signature sound isn’t easy with them. I’d say both songs I linked (the one I covered and Waiting Room) are as good as anything else. You’ll find examples of both throughout all their albums. They were born out of the early 80s Washington DC punk scene and that comes through on everything they’ve put out. If you’re looking for an album to check out that really gets to the essence of Fugazi, I’d go with In on the Kill Taker. That album is so solid all the way through. It’s the most similar to one of their live shows, which they were famous for.
Edit: If you’re looking for comparable bands / sounds, Henry Rollins era Black Flag or Husker Du are good comps.
Thanks! Appreciate the added insight!
I always admired Fugazi and really dug 13 Songs, but Hüsker Dü were my jam. And of course Rollins was amazing in Black Flag. Plus, female bassist!
If I were to point to a single Fugazi song I liked the most, it would be Arpeggiator. It’s not very representative but I loved it.
Oh and of course: your cover is awesome, well done! Bass sounded great.
That is seriously cool… thanks for sharing that
I love that both Bob Mould and Greg Norton are still punk/post-hardcore AF in their solo careers.
RIP Grant.
Outstanding! I’m amazed that you managed to get the band to coordinate clothing as well!
Heavy! Great playing!!!
Super heavy! Great playing!!!
The B52’s - Good Stuff bass cover / improvisation
Hit the root,
1-&-2,
then improvise
to ride that groove!
Most excellent fun!!
Hohner Professional B Bass into the Hotone Ampero (clean, but lots of compression), then on into GarageBand
That was good stuff, sunDOG! Looked like a lot of fun to play that groove. Clean and tight. I always like hearing the bass line continue when the rest of the music stops…
