Thank you Duncan, seriously. I’ve spent my life musically on the fringes of polite society. I don’t tend to bump in to a lot of other Skinny Puppy fans, or 50 year old punks / goths still living the dream. I tend to just keep to myself about it, which would obviously be impossible here unless I went with just playing best of the 90s grunge hits that guys my age seem to do.
The part that concerns me a little is that the last 5 or 6 years, I’m starting to try and work those tastes (tastefully) back into my work attire. I’m currently shopping for a pair of George Cox creepers in another tab atm. Corporate goth.

I loved (love) the whole goth thing, but I also loved (love) the glamour of Duran2. Combine the two … that’s perfect!
Since taking up the bass, my taste has become increasingly eclectic. These is just so much great stuff out there and with the power of iTunes, it’s all instantly accessible!
Fun fact. I have three or four other Anthrax songs in my “working on” list. This one is the easiest, since it doesn’t crank up to 210+ bpm eighths and sixteenths during the guitar solo.
Well it finally happened! In April I left the basement and joined a band and this has kept me pretty busy the last three months. It has truly been a blast, love my bandmates, we’ve played 5 gigs together so far, with more coming up August. I’ll have to post about that experience elsewhere.
Anyway, no gig this weekend, I joined my sister and her two boys on a roadtrip to Albany to see Craig Finn (The Hold Steady) and Patterson Hood (Drive-by Truckers). It was a special day with great people and a chance to hear two gifted and iconic songwriters up close. Hood finished the set with this song and I just couldn’t get it out of my head and wanted to record it to capture the moment. Yeah, Dan! So happy for you! After I saw your cover of “Stand Back” by the Allman Brothers on here a while back, I was thinking ‘this dude is waaaay overdue to join a band’. And it’s great that you’re enjoying your bandmates. Where have your gigs been so far?

Thanks so much John! We’ve mostly played at bars, one restaurant, and a small theater. East PA (Lehigh Valley, Philly, one gig in NJ). Here is a pic from a pub gig in June. Need to get some audio going next time.
We play a lot of originals and a variety of covers (Sabbath, Beatles, Bob Marley, Amy Winehouse, Johnny Cash etc.). We’re a little hard to categorize, some like “Psychedelic Rock” but there are a lot of influences at play. This band was running full speed ahead when I joined so the biggest challenge was learning 3 hours of music so quickly (thank you 50 song challenge). Two originals were written after I joined and I got a chance write my own bass parts for the first time. This has been awesome ride so far.
Thanks a lot! One thing I’ve learned about my DBT covers, don’t change a thing, just run the P-Bass through the Orange and hit record I like the outro to this song very much, I experimented with adding some bass for color but in the end I stayed out and just left it as intended.
Been a little bit since I posted, but I’ve still been getting after it. Got a new tool for the shed- the Sire U5! My first foray into short scale AND passive AND P/J, so there’s a lot happening with that (my other axes are all active, either dual or single humbucker or soapbar)
Figured I’d start my adventures with the U5 with something relatively simple and, if I’m not mistaken, from B2B-
Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine”
Chain for this one is as straight up as it gets- just used Logic’s Bass Amp Designer “Flip Top”and just a hair of Saturn2’s warm tube to supplement the presence bus)
Deftones - My Own Summer (Shove It)
Next up was a stark pivot to some Deftones- and, I have to say, there’s a high degree of dissonance I encountered recording a song that takes place entirely on one string, on a five string bass- but hey this is a safe space, right? it’d been a hot minute since I picked up the TRBX and since it leans aggressive, I thought it a good fit. For the chain, I managed to squeeze Darkglass and Saturn2 together to create the right amount of hair for this one.
Alice in Chains - Rooster
So a short scale U5 is seemingly very antithetical to the Spector NS-2 on which Mike Starr recorded the original track, and the SR500 feels like it would’ve been a better fit, but I’m in the business of “you did what?” definitely some timing issues here, but I’ll blame that on the notion that the original tune was apparently recorded without a metronome and certainly not my own insufficiency as a musician. The hardest part about this one for me was getting the flanger/phaser right for the chorus- there was a Goldilocks zone that I couldn’t find, so we just sent it here. Another questionable attempt at layering grind- used the Sansamp emulator within Amplitube for the verses and Darkglass on the choruses.
Rammstein - Du Hast
So first and foremost, this video has had issues… I really don’t know why, I’ve uploaded it to YouTube four separate times, including two that were re-exported from FCPX with different export settings (not that it matters because the other… 30 something videos I’ve uploaded have all had the same settings, etc). So, if for some reason, this one shows up as unavailable, I apologize. But, another one string, three note groove (& arguably another misuse of the five string ) and solid example of how note placement in a measure changes the groove. Very fun song to play, and it’s a shame that beyond this, Rammstein never really gained much radio play in the US. Used the Orange AD200 in Amplitube for this one and Darkglass on the presence bus. Also tried to sprinkle in a bit of a phaser to pick up where Moises 86’d the synth used in the original.

Welcome to the “Post Your Covers!” thread! Yeah, recording video (instead of just audio) is a different beast altogether. Nice start…I like the octaves towards the end. On the video side of things, it would improve the viewing experience if you sync your audio and video so that your plucking matches when the note sounds out. You’ve got your YT comments turned off or I would have left a comment there.

Well played! Never heard that tune before. As I wrote on your YT channel, that is really interesting that the song was considered “country pop” as there ain’t much that’s country about it. I guess because it was recorded in Nashville?
