Well, Fortunate Son was so much fun I had to dig back into another Creedence Classic. Bought that album at the Eglin AFB Base Exchange in Florida during my senior year in college, and still have it! Playing Yamaha BB734A.
Another Cocteau song, and I’m not apologizing. I’m probably going to do another one soon. I’ve just been really feeling Simon Raymonde’s bass lines the last few months. There’s a lot gong on here with effects. I’m going comp straight into a split crossover (200hz). The sub 200 path is clean with just an SVT4-PRO / Ampeg 8X10 amp and cab. The wet path is running a tubescreamer (clean mid boost), flanger, delay, and reverb.
Another busy week - it doesn’t seem to stop - so really need to do a proper catch-up on all the covers. Notwithstanding, here’s this weekend’s submission:
Rolling Stones - Get Off Of My Cloud bass improvisation
This is my interpretation of the original, plus couple of live versions. Feels like a fast line to play, but great fun!
I’m playing a Bass Collection P bass (for sale, if anyone is interested), through my Boss ME-90B into GarageBand via a Scarlett Solo.
Ah, another great improv.. fits perfectly. (and that is not feint). What year was that concert version? I can guarantee the older Stones were playing faster than the original '65 45 version we danced to in high school. That one seemed plenty fast already, so you diving into the concert album is brave.
Ok. After the lesson on the animals house of the rising sun I promised myself. PROMISED myself I would never play it again. Now I’m gonna. I’ll do it here.
Love CCR! Nice job! That is cool you still have this album from back in the day!
Tone sounds wild (I mean that in a positive way). VERY cool song. I wonder how they performed a song like that live with those vocals. When I first heard them, I assumed there were twin sisters singing those vocals, but you discover it is just the one singer who recorded multiple tracks. She is pretty amazing.
Lovin’ these Stones covers, Duncan! Well played! Quick tempo and your timing was solid.
I finally feel confident to tackle some more Dance Gavin Dance. In general this is probably the most proggiest song I’ve learned in the sense that it starts in one place and ends in a completely different place. This was a really fun one to learn
Dance Gavin Dance - It’s Safe to Say You Dig The Backseat
Really great job! I’m impressed you memorized all those sections. That song changes gears quite a bit. Your tone is amazing, as always. Is that a Spector bass? And are you using a pre-amp?
Ok a little embarrassed to share this attempt but I’m trying to challenge myself and capture progress. This is a song I’ve wanted to learn for a long time but shied away from it. I think I can get there but will likely take some more slow practice time and build back up to recording another take. The constant ghost notes, octaves, and popping along with the speed make it quite a challenge. John Taylor is awesome.
This is Girls On Film by Duran Duran recorded on my Fender Aerodyne Jazz through a compressor and the Sansamp Bass Driver Di.
There is no being embarrassed on this forum for improving your playing and sharing your progress. Ever. This is what the forum and this thread is for, not to show off perfection but progress.
There’s no crying in bass either…
Now that that’s out of the way - this is really good and show a lot of promise. To my ear all that’s off is your timing cs the groove. You’ve nailed the notes and even more importantly articulation and tone and the whole thing screams Taylor. So well done @beaurapp !!!
All that’s left is to lock in the groove and you’ve nailed it.
Thank you so much! Yeahh I sensed the timing getting off in parts, especially the bridge. Nerves definitely got to me. I felt more on in the moments where I felt relaxed with it. I told the cover band I want to play this, so I’m committed now haha.
