Post Your Covers! (2026)

Great job! @BumbleJazz that tone is insane!

Nicely done. That’s hard play. Good work!

I want to expand. I’ve played this maybe 20 or 30 times. It’s a fine workout, requiring absolute articulation. You’ve done well. Keep going!

Such a cool one Craig! You even dressed for the part! Great job, but in true Stu Cook style, you should really be playing an old “Gut Bass” like he did on the Es Sullivan show when he portrayed “Binkey”..:rofl::rofl:. Loved it though…. Nicely done!

Even though, this was truly AWESOME! Your agility and persistence are totally obvious in this performance. We are always our own worst critics…. I’d be totally proud if I could get my fingers to move half as fast! KUDOS!

You weren’t kidding when you said this!! Honestly, I don’t know the song at all, but could tell you were locked in with that pick and your timing sounded spot on - like I said though, I don’t know the song…. It was however a really cool transition part way through and you were obviously really into the song! Nice!

When I was about 10 my dad built a gut bucket base to play with. I tried it a few times as a kid. Somehow it did not make the move from Arkansas to DC area when I was 14.

This is where I admit the truth about my covers. They are going to go downhill from here.

I’ve been diagnosed with tardive dyskenesia. For those of you who don’t know, this means uncontrolled movements of particularly the mouth, but also the hands.

I tried to do the animals song. It was so bad. I’m not going to post it.

I wish I had played better. I dominated this section of the forum with videos of me. It was unfair and selfish.

I’ll still be here, I’m still watching all of your covers. I wish I could do some.

Just finished my latest song, and as such while laying down the bass line for the release version (releases 10/31), I also recorded a version for my bass cover…

“He Has Done It”

is a song I wrote for my adult grandchildren. Four of my six grands are now (or have) served in the military, and having been former military myself, all I can do is pray for their safety…

The song was inspired by Psalm 22, and after writing it, I elected to produce it in the key of Bb Major since I wanted to give my Lakeland 5 String Fretless a work out, and with the LaBella DFT Nylon Tape-wounds, it proved to be the right choice for me…. Very rarely do I incorporate a low ‘B’ string into my music, but when I do, it’s purposely executed for effect - much like the slides that are pure silk on a fretless….

On my fingering, you’ll notice that my notes seem to be held on the fret-markers instead of like on a fretted bass where they are fingered behind a fret.. I set this bass up so that all intonation is set and tested at the fret-line markers for accuracy purposes..

I played the bass in the passive mode and kept all controls at the mid-point since I use Garage Band as my DAW and find it easier to manipulate tones and frequencies within the application.

Enjoy! And Keep On Thumpin’!

First, I’m sorry to hear this Paul…. I can only hope and pray that you are able to manage the symptoms to keep things from worsening.

Many of us here suffer from various ailments or diseases which rear their ugly heads at times - especially us “older” musicians… Personally, I deal with Carpal Tunnel which causes twitching in my fingers at times that become evident a lot of times on my covers… And, Arthritis doesn’t help much either - so, I just don’t play beyond my capabilities anymore, and, instead if focusing on playing as much as I use to, I got back into writing and producing my own music.

Even though you may not be able to play as you would like, there are still many ways to stay involved and active in music….

There’s a “Song” in everything - all you gotta do is “listen”…

Praying for ya man!

Still got mine!…. Used it on that same cover of “Down On The Corner” about six years ago…

Looking (and listening) back, knowing that I spent several days myself on this song, it became obvious to me that the timing of the bass rhythm is very difficult to totally “Lock Into”… As a result, my bass line can be heard to be a bit “rushed” in some spots. I decided to keep this cover that way to at least show that even though we may practice songs that sound good when we play them, recording them and playing them back will always reveal those timing issues… This is how we all learn, and that’s why I love making covers… It’s a great way to learn!

This sounds amazing! How do you like the Lakland? I have the same one in white and really love the tones you can get.

Thank John! I LOVE my Lakeland. One heavy bass though! But the tones you can pull out of them is amazing. It was a bit of a change moving to a five string after years on a four banger, but once I started floating my thumb, it was so much easier to work. Getting use to having no frets was another challenge especially during set up, but once I skinned that cat it all kinda came together….

Oooh I didn’t notice that!

Yes - this is clipping distortion and I would suspect either the audio interface gain is too high and it is clipping, or it’s levels in the DAW. In Reaper want to shoot for each track in the DAW to be averaging no higher than -8 to -12 dBFS (or lower, pros go for -18) with peaks up to -4 or so, and the final master mix to peak no higher than -1 dBFS. If it is peaking over 0 it’s way too high.

If you start using DAW plugins, analog-modeled plugins will also start to overdrive with inputs higher than -18, for amp sims. Some just automatically gain stage down, but not all of them.

OK, noodling over the weekend I stumbled into a distinctive memorable rif from junior year of HS, so had to find the song and cover it. The primary rif is fine, but I had trouble hearing the bridge because it was buried in the original and the STEM process pulled almost all of the bass into the Instruments stem with the piano; ;the bass stem was almost silent. You can hear my stumbles on the bridge.
Could use advice on how to get the timing right when the solo bass is the lead-in to the song. I had to record this a dozen times to get it close to right.

Great cover Craig!! Love this song and yes, for me it brings back some memories… As for the Bridge, I think I would take my bass notes lower down the neck and hit the “money” during that segment. Everything else is high, playing mid sorta blends but the bass in this song drives the machine… Go low… especially during a bridge when all things kinda change… Just my 2 cents…

Thank you, it helps that I’ve been listening to this song and album for like 10 years lol. Yeah this is a Spector and I’m using a Darkglass Infinity Pedal with a bass plugin on my PC. I try not to add too many effects to my tone(s) because I like a growly tone more than I like a distorted tone. My Spector is probably my best sounding bass followed by my Dingwall. I think the Dingwall is more versatile but I haven’t REALLY messed around with getting the “perfect” tone that I love like I have with my Spector.

Thank you @John_E I enjoy playing with a pick if only for the sound I get playing with one

I’m really interested in both brands but the price tag makes my eyes water! What model Spector do you have? I see they have more budget friendly models but haven’t heard much about them. Same for Dingwall. The SP1 is about the limit of what I’d want to pay and I have heard good things, though they aren’t active.
