Project Basses

Quite the stripper, ain’tcha

Do you find that the wood scratches easily with the knife? How do you plan to refinish it?

Cool, Barney! I’m looking forward to seeing how the project goes.

Yes it’s a really soft wood. So you have to keep the scraper blade as flat as possible. But using a heat gun is much easier than sanding a poly finish off.

I’m going to have a go at spraying nitrocellulose from cans. I found a Canadian company that has good reviews so I’m buying a complete finishing kit from them.

Awesome. Brad Angove, a fellow Canuck is a huge fan of these lacquers. I look forward to this build.

Can’t wait to get back into my own build, after my move to Saudi Oilberta next month.

That is great @Barney , I’m interested to see how it turns out. I have a EBMM Stingray Special with black gloss that I wanted to return to natural wood with a satin finish, but I am afraid of what is underneath the paint :grimacing:

Could be punk :metal:

I’ve watched a lot of YT content over the past week about refinishing guitars. This series is hands down the best, most professional video I’ve come across. In case you’re thinking of giving it a go.

I remember watching this. I’m just staining though. Which I already kinda fucked up around the string ferrules on the back :eyes: I didn’t remove enough original finish there and thought the stain would just cover it. It did not :eyes: oh well. I can fix it and I’m learning:woman_shrugging:t2:

Hey everyone…got a question. I’ve finally got enough money to get around to working on my dollar sign bass. I bought a Fender Mexican J Bass neck for $249 and the Fender Mexican Hipshot tuners for $107 but I’m trying to decide on what J bass pickups I should get. The Fenders, Seymour Duncans or the Dimarzios run the gamut from $35 for Fender Mexicans up to $188 for the Duncans and a bunch in between. I’m leaning toward the Fender Orignals for $129.

If I stick with the MIM, the Fender Mexican neck pickup would be $22.99 and the bridge would be $39.99 but I’m not sure of the sound.

If I were to build a Jazz, my top 3 pickups would be in no order, Dimarzio, Fralin, or that guy who makes the custom Geddy Lee pickups, name slips my mind.

Fender Custom Shop 60’s are pricey but, to my ears, they’re the best jazz pickups Fender has put out.

Out of the ones you both list, I CAN get the Dimarzrio DP123 set for $150

OK…based on @Wombat-metal 's recommendation, I got the DiMarzio DP123 set…all that’s left to buy I think is the strings…any ideas?

I got these green strings here that I soon won’t using.

Rotosound 77 monel flats pair well and have surprising highs is my experience

Are those the same neon ones Charles Berthoud used in his last video?
