Project Basses

Well time has come for presentation.

As some of you may know I’ve bought some upgrades for Ray4, and it happened to bring more mods to it.

I’ll be putting shots that my tech sent me, tomorrow I’ll be getting the bass into my hands.

Shot of mostly broken pieces of wood where screws hold control plate. It arrived like this from Thomann. I was reimbursed for this.

Process of glueing it back.

Some holes got expanded for new bridge.

Shielding for control plate.

New bridge got installed.

He decided to shield whole cavity actually.

'79 Stingray preamp installed.

Polished frets.

Pic without strings.

Put on strings, saw that poles didn’t line up perfectly with new bridge spacing. Bridge is actually OEM Sterling by MusicMan from Ray34. But Aguillar AG4M has no issues with it. Sound is still killer.

After new bridge was installed and he put on strings, he realized cause there’s much more of a mass on the bridge that he needed a shim to properly setup the bass.

And final product.
P.S. You might notice that knobs are missing. I’ve ordered new ones cause old ones are for pots that are 6mm, but new pots are 6.35mm.

Bonus: Sound test. Buddy of my tech came to him and tested out bass sound and playability.
Judge for youself. Strings are GHS Boomers Flea Signature. I have no idea about preamp settings.

If you wonder what they talk about is:
Guy playing: “Nothing to say. It’s BASS and a half.” (meaning it’s badass)
Tech who is recording: “Is action good?”
Guy playing: “Mhm, yes. Nothing to say, it’s super.”

P.S. All of this costed 25 euros, not including expenses for hardware.

A Les Paul can do the kill switch trick without mods.
I’ve never tried it on a bass but great fun on the right song.

Maybe not gold sparkles but I’m adding a prismatic carbon fiber pick guard

There is an appropriate theme song for this bass:

Amazing ideas. You should change your nick from @athosmr2003 to luthiermr2003

I like the idea of a kill switch but it would be song specific. What about an active/passive switch? That would another layer of tone control but you would probably need to change to using stacked pots to get the most out of it.

Right now, I’m kinda obsessed by the idea of building an upright bass from a suitcase. my idea would be that the neck could be disassembled without any tool, and stored into the suitcase to make some kind of portable cheap upright bass.

some inspiration :

@eric.kiser that’s a fabulous idea. I could probably manage the passive circuit myself, route it through the active/passive switch before the jack socket and start looking for a two band preamp.

Ha, what an awesome idea.

I like the bigger suitcase version

What would be really cool is if one of the cases could be stylised to look like “The Luggage” from Terry Pratchett’s books.

Elsewise, what a fabulous project, @terb I would love to follow along.

Ok it’s time for a fun fun project. The Joe Dart project.

I have 2 sb4 which is almost the same shape as Joe Dart body no front cavity, which is a plus. I can plug the unused knobs holes as well as Pickguard mounting holes. The vintage style bridge is definitely a plus as I can convert this to a mute bridge.

So this is the part I have coming.
White quad coil (4 conductor wires) Delano MM pickup
Delano Sonar Xpure
Push pull pot

It’s going to be a single knob push/pull passive active running equivalent to 18v.

Now does anyone has any good suggestions on minimal sanding method of removing paint. I don’t hate sanding I just hate level sanding, lol. I need to knock this to a natural finished.

Here’s the Joe Dart signature bass

Here’s my sterling SB4

Here’s the components I ordered

Thanks for your input.

Very worthwhile project, @Al1885 . I suggest a heat gun and and a plastic putty knife. Limits your sanding to the very last remnants of paint and fine finish sanding. Plastic putty knife to not mar the wood underneath.
