I would want the Telstar of the two
Same, but in black. And I’d have to replace the salami.
maybe it’s from watching gwiz on YouTube (which btw I don’t know why I watch it all the time, cuz… it’s kinda boring). but anyhow I really like what this company is putting out there
Saw that one. There’s a whole lot to like. I’d only spec a couple of things a little differently to my prefs, but it is a beauty.
Found a “70’s musicmaster” on FB marketplace for sale locally, post has the vibe of someone wanting to move it. Unfortunately no disassembled pics. One thing I noticed was that the neck was painted to match the body. Is there anyone who knows about these? All the example I found on reverb/ebay had a stained neck. I’m wondering if this is a red flag.
Well I don’t think that’s the original tuners. If it’s less than $400 I “might” have a F it moment. Original in good condition would go for $800- $1000
To play this game one must understand that once you change the original look you lose significant value.
I agree those don’t look like original tuners. Musicmasters are love it or leave it instruments. They have their own sound from a single coil guitar pickup.
What else has been changed? If it’s cheap I might get it with an eye to bringing it back to original as much as possible. But only if I liked the musicmaster sound
Ok upon checking. That tuner set was available on 74 and 75 musicmaster. So it’s legit.
I still question them, yes MM had tulip tuners but on a 50 year old bass there’s little aging
yeah, the thumb rest is in a weird place too, but I did find a few early 70’s (pre 73-74ish) ones where this was the case. These also seem to have the smaller tuners too. I also wonder about that painted neck. I just don’t think I know enough about them to bother with actually buying it. But, its kinda a fun exercise trying to figure it out.
What do you mean? That’s the correct Leo’s position.
I meant different. Most of the ones I found had it as a thumb rest, but the early ones all seem to have it there.
Yeah it’s the homage to Leo being naive. He thought that people wold plug the string with their thumb so he put the rest there for the rest of the finger to “claw” it,
I never stopped to consider it, but imagine for a sec that leos method had become the preferred style and everybody played with their thumb. with some of the advanced double thumb techniques today you could see it.
awesome collection from @TheMaartian in the show us your basses thread
Thanks for the cross-post. Good to know that this thread exists.
Randy Newman may not want Short People, but I want Short (scale) Basses!
oh yes. amazing buncha basses you got there. how long did you have to wait for the mayones cali’s (if you got them direct from them?). i’ve always wondered what the turnaround time for those are.
Yes, I bought them direct. Mayones makes them in batches of around 12 when they have enough leftover pieces of wood, not on a regular schedule. I got lucky .They were part way through a batch with 5 4 string basses and 4 5 string basses still available. The sales manager sent me photos of each bass (two had tuners, bridge and strings; all the others were bare) and I chose from them. I paid in full and received them in less than 4 weeks. If they hadn’t had a batch in progress, it could have been much longer .
they’re so cute. i have a kala solid body ubass, so that is my (very) downscaled version
I just put the Dogal string on and it sounds so awesome, just like the normal size bass, which is epic.
