Short Love

Rainer Wind playing a Sire U5 was a push toward me getting one. (I ordered one in “natural” which should arrive next week!). Now if I can get my hands as relaxed as his look as he plays…

Who says short scale basses sound like crap when slapped? Rainer on a U5 proved them wrong.

I have my Sire U5!

Borrowed a 10 watt amp today, so I can play and hear. Oh, man, this electric amplified stuff is so much fun! And the Sire is so easy to play. The shape of the neck is very comfortable to my hands, easy to get to all the frets.

I had no issue at all switching from my 25 inch acoustic to the 30 inch U5, the difference in frets and string tension wasn’t really noticeable.

Wasn’t really able to play with the tone and pick-ups because the amp has some limitations. But it works, and I’m happy!

so the new stingrays are out. always fun for me, as the ss stingray is my main bass. kind of a mixed bag this year, MM seems to follow a pattern of being rather conservative one year and then wild the next, and we’re in the more umm boring year. the grey governor is gorgeous but we’ve seen it before, and the green mystique is new and awesome. specs seem unchanged this year. see them at music man’s website.

And they come with the excellent passive electronics set that’s on my Commerford shorty! I like the green one with the black hardware.

Today I learned a fun piece of history: the first electric bass guitar (Paul Tutmarc’s “Audiovox 736”, only 100 made in the mid-1930s) was a SHORT SCALE at 30 1/2 inches.

There’s a museum in Seattle, where Tutmarc made them, which has one on display. Time for a road trip!

very cool. yes at the beginning the scale length was all over the place and definitely not set in stone that 34" was standard. so you had lots of people playing short scale. for instance…

always have, although i gotta say i am both wanting and surprised there isn’t an active version. you know, like every other damn stingray on earth and what they’re friggin famous for :rofl:

not really my cup of tea, but a large number of people go crazy for stuff like this. 30" scale

That is nice but I’m sure it’s too rich for my blood.

I’m happy with my Sterling RaySS4 in fiesta red anyway

This luthier makes some really beautiful handcrafted hollow body electrics, by far the majority being guitars.

No doubt this little shorty is a badass for anyone into the hollow body feel and tonality.

Hofner for me. (yeah, yeah. How un-original)

Interesting you post this,
I was just this morning thinking about giving my Epiphone Viola some attention after a bit of a break.

I have been playing brighter sounding basses and feel like getting back to the thump.
