It’s a great little bass. I think, at least 4 BassBuzzers have it, including me.
I have modded it heavily (of course) … it sounds good out of the box, but even better with EMG pickups.

You can play it up to Drop D easily cause of the .125 E string.
It sounds really “Whoooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw!”, not like a tiny bass at all!
It was almost used on a live gig by one of my bass playing park punk chicks, but ADHS made her forget about it

Still, if I would buy a tiny bass now, I would get a Harley Benton JB-62CC Mini and put Blackstar strings on it (as well as EMG pickups).

Reasons:

  • it look much more grown up
  • 38mm nut
  • Having two pickups allows for more flexibility

I almost want to buy one of those, or the Blackstar, just to play them on stage for the double-take … “What the **** is he playing?!

I think the HB is currently not in stock. Though a friend of mine sells his (if he still has it). He found it dumped at a street corner … and it was as good as new. I can ask him if you want to. It will be cheap!

It’s really impressive what those little things can do … and yes, it looks very funny, which is a 100% plus!
In terms of tone: they sound very deep and lack the higher frequencies. But you won’t miss them, guaranteed!

If you go for the HB … get the Blackstar String set with the .125 E-String. They are about 20€ at Amazon.co.uk.
Maybe the Blackstar is better for you - you like 42mm nuts, right?

Go one then, ask…the challenge is that we Brits decided to impose import duties on ourselves…!

Also if he flags it as a present?

Any hints on how they wire the on-board passive fuzz?
I have been looking for a way to do that without success.
@howard ??

Yamaha does the passive boost in my Revstar with a literal power transformer. It’s so weird I love it even if I haven’t yet found a use.

Do you know what/how it is wired?

the googs turned up this:

Cool, where did you find that?
Is it a specific unit they have wired in?

I use the cut on the RSE pretty often. Crank the tone to 10 and run it on the bridge pickup and you get a real nice strat sound.

The diagram or the guitar?

This is the third Revstar RSS20 I have owned. The power transformer is a pretty unique thing Yamaha did with it, both the Standard and the Pro have it.

The diagram I just googled.

Serek’s use diodes to create signal clipping. Not that I personally know much about it.

More below is from google but gotta take google AI with a grain of salt. It once told me that luminlay side dots were created with wenge :squinting_face_with_tongue:

Serek basses produce passive fuzz sounds using their proprietary “Skuzz Serkit,” a simple onboard passive circuit that uses diodes to create signal clipping. The circuit is entirely passive, meaning it does not require a battery or any active electronics to function.

How the passive fuzz circuit works

  • Diode clipping: At its core, the passive fuzz circuit relies on diode clipping to distort the signal. A diode is an electrical component that allows current to flow in only one direction. When the bass’s output signal exceeds a certain voltage, the diodes in the circuit “clip” the waveform, cutting off the signal peaks.
  • Altered waveform: The clipped and altered waveform is what produces the characteristic distorted, fuzzy sound. This differs from an active fuzz pedal, which uses transistors and other powered components to amplify and shape the distortion.
  • No battery needed: Because the circuit is passive, it uses the bass’s own signal output to drive the effect. This allows players to activate a simple, but effective, fuzz tone with the flick of a toggle switch, without worrying about a dead battery.

A lot of people like the cut on the RSE more than the passive OD on the RSS. Both sounded good to me. NGL I love the twee idea of a power transformer in a guitar.

I really wish they’d release a Revstar with a trem again. Even if it’s another Bigsby.

I’m more sad they took the racing stripes off the P90 version.
