I don’t know if it’s my lack of history or what, but I just can’t imagine dealing with tubes. Lots of solid state stuff sounds great. Maybe it doesn’t sound exactly like tube amps do, but after looking up the hybrid svt heads 35+ lb weight and super high cost, solid state seems great lol.

Plenty of great sounding solid state amps, for sure.

Hybrid heads are actually a great idea and they do not have to be super heavy. The smaller tubes in the preamp have the biggest tonal impact.

I do kind of want one of these. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TerrorStamp--orange-terror-stamp-20-watt-valve-hybrid-guitar-amp-pedal

Put an entire tube pre-amp and solid state power amp in a pedal, brilliant! Orange did get their solid state amps sounding great as well though.

And the follow up

70 pounds for the Portaflex combo, btw.

For me, it’s the same reason I prefer analog synths, vinyl records and stick shift cars: they’re just more fun to me. From a technology standpoint they’re completely obsolete but I don’t care. I love the imperfection. I love the ritual. I love it all.

At least that has the cab. I looked up one of the all tube svt 300 watt heads and that was 80 lbs by itself. Miss me with that lol

I enjoy playing with my analog synths and will definitely use them, but if it comes down to it for real work I’m usually going for the digital synths

94 pounds for my SVT-III head + Yamaha 4x10 cab :v::smiling_face_with_tear:

Still not so bad. The head can easilly be carried with one hand, and I have to add some casters to the cab to make it easier to move.

Also I’m considering building a 15" Thiele cab (TL606) for a more modular setup and hopefully a lighter and more compact cab option. Or a 12" (TL806). Just an idea but it could be cool.

I was looking at Gojira stuff and he uses a two notes revolt tube pre-amp pedal with an HX stomp being used as a compressor. I could maybe see myself going that far towards tube stuff, but even this seems like overkill when you could just use the stomp amp sim. Using an entire HX stomp just to have a compressor is hilarious overkill, but they can afford it

For a while I was a major preamp geek and I landed on the EBS ValveDrive. I think it sounds significantly better than the Two Notes stuff.

But yes, in the end, software ftw. It’s just so much more convenient and flexible for recording it isn’t even funny. Plus, it often sounds better too

He probably use multiple presets on the Helix for different songs. Using an external preamp gives more dsp for other effects too, and that revolt tube preamps sounds pretty good tbh.

If I was a successful musician I would try out a lot of gear :joy:

Here’s the video. It seems pretty clear it’s just a compressor. They do have stomps running effects for guitars so it’s probably just logistically easier

True … but how could it be satisfying for people addicted to turning knobs, like me ? :v::smiling_face_with_tear:

We can give you some boxes with placebo knobs.

Pretty cool! Funny to see that they use two big Darkglass amps which acts as a poweramp

I would say don’t buy real tube stuff unless you are compelled to

Tubes themselves can be annoyingly old fashioned and quirky even in modern gear, but as you might expect, they are actual tubes that sound like it (the only proven cure for tube fever)

I use this 30w tube amp between my pedals and my 500w amp and am very happy with the tone I get

Yeah agree - I bought it because I specifically wanted it, not because I felt I needed it.

Absolutely agree :+1: the best “Tube” is the Solid state imitation. I was told several times that my Katana Artist sounds like a Tube amp if not better, but definitely easier to live with.

The best tube amps are actually in software, and weigh nothing

But tubes are so fun to play with and swap around for tonal characteristics. I would recommend at least trying tube preamps like the ValveDrive or the Two Notes stuff at some point, they sound awesome and give some great natural warm compression.

There’s some solid state preamps that also do a great job of that sound too though, yeah. The Tech21 VT Bass DI is the best one I found, and a lot of people really like Ampeg’s latest.
