Show Us Your Basses (Part 2)

I think if I were to get a Warwick… for myself, I would go with a fretless

Check used, much better.

I’m a bit odd when it comes to gear … for amps / stomp boxes / FX sure I’ll go used … but I prefer to go new when I buy a bass.

Just the way I always have been with gear.

Yep, I’ve always preferred to buy new instruments. I’ve bought used only when an instrument is rare or out of production and there’s no alternative.

I personally don’t care about hunting for deals. I’d rather buy from a reputable vendor, break in a new instrument myself, and, of course, have a warrantee in case there’s an issue.

I know others might not agree, and that’s cool with me. I don’t spend their time/money and they don’t spend mine. :joy:

Our music store here isn’t one of those mega chain conglomerates … so no Guitar Works or Long and McQuade here… its a mom and pop shop. I like supporting the small guy.

and YES, if there is something wrong out of the box. Covered!

We are on the same page

I actually trust used instrument purchases significantly more than sight unseen new instrument purchases - it just seems way safer if the seller has a good rep, and minor issues are often already ironed out when you go that route.

However, nothing beats buying new if you can buy an instrument you try yourself to find just the right one.

Of course, sight unseen from premium brands like Mayones or Dingwall will be fine. However I would never, ever buy a new Fender or (especially) Gibson sight unseen.

(Sire and Yamaha are probably outliers - mass production brands but still known for very good quality control)

I get ya  I’m just too damn lazy to ‘vet’ sellers … LOL ( I can be honest ) …

I am lucky with the music shop here, every one of the staff that work there are instructors in the Conservatory. So they are actual musicians … I like that kind of environment… ask a question, get a real honest answer.

What I am thinking for down the road … is a Dingwall 5 string… and perhaps a Warwick Fretless… then hit the brakes :stuck_out_tongue:

LOL

Have you actually purchased several new instruments sight unseen?

I have, and I know many, many players who have, too. I personally have had zero issues doing so. As for others who have had an issue with a new instrument purchase, free shipping warranty service or returns/refunds were a breeze.

Personally, I don’t care who buys what, used or new, but I can attest that buying new instruments sight unseen has offered me a vast array of instrument opportunities and choices I would never have had. YMMV

Three or four yes. One I had to RMA (and it was from a very well known brand.)

The other basses were Yamahas and were fine. One was an Arturia controller and it was fine too.

One new amp I bought sight unseen was DOA and got RMA’d.

So, for me, it’s been a real mixed bag. As you said, mileage varies.

A dear friend of mine once had an issue with a Sweetwater purchase of a Sire V8. Apparently, they shipped him a bass with visible wear and minus case candy, docs, etc. it was likely a return from some asshat who had played the crap out of it before returning it.

Still, one phone call was all it took to get the thing squared away: RMA, refund, free shipping pickup.

That would be me, and it left no sour taste. While I’d love to once visit bass mega neighborhoods, like in Japan, every bass I have (5), and two incoming, I couldn’t be happier than to obtain them while avoiding human interaction.

Yeah here’s a spot where used is as good if not better than new. If electronics is going to fail, it will be out of the box. The only bad preamps I have had are brand spanking new basses. Once you get past that they tend to last forever. So used is more reliable in many cases.

But you like new, so buy new.
