Well., what with the cardboard box and all… it looked like @TheMaartian had received a body and a neck to finish according to his own taste/preferences. I wasn’t aware that Mayones had sent him photos of some of their ongoing builds…
(I can’t seem to get photo updates on my own build from them, for crying out loud
)
Also, it would be a great idea … it’s like a grown-up expensive Lego. I would really dig that!
@joergkutter - yeah, but that’s only Harley Benton! ^^
There’s always Warmoth.
Mayones would be really expensive trial and error kit though ![]()
Definitely a poor choice to mod
Why?
If body and neck (incl frets) are done, the rest is like Lego!
Not that I’m really thinking about it, cause of $$$.
My first step would indeed be the HB kit, as @joergkutter suggested and then a piece of wood, like 13ghosts did with his bass:
And only then (and after I have been a midnight cowboy for a few months to make the money), I would work with the Mayones DIY kit.
Way to perpetuate a myth ![]()
There is NO Mayones DIY kit!
Not yet, my friend! But a man can dream…
Well, how about this then:
https://formentera-guitars.com/
As a card-carrying Germanophile and outdoor player, this should be right up your alley ![]()
How did you know? I am card carrying NRA member too … “Nederlandse Rollebolle Associatie” ![]()
So, this sounds very interesting, really. I could bike and build a bass. And my GF could do her stuff…
That one is screaming for a rosewood fretboard (or similar color)
I like how your mind works, sir ![]()
Yeah … @TheMaartian might be the new kid on the block, but he really fits in!

Mayones is a world-class lutherie shop. They would never, ever, ever ship out anything but a complete, meticulously made, quality controlled instrument.
Not every player is consumed with DIY part-swapping. I’d wager that most definitely are not.
Mayones has offered their own preamp for quite some time. They only restarted making their own Velvetrone pickups in the last couple of years. I placed my custom P/MM build January 3, 2023. It is the first ever bass with custom-made 4-string Velvetrone pickups.
