Show Us Your Basses (Part 2)

My Fender '60s Jazz reissue circa the early 2000s, hecho en Mexico.

My only long scale bass is a MIM '63 reissue Jazz that looks just like yours. It was a nostalgia purchase (my first bass was a used '63 Jazz I bought in '67). It was the first bass I bought after firing my 3rd and final ex and started playing again. The neck was never stable. I forgot what a PITA truss rod adjustments were, having to pull the neck. It finally got to the point where the truss rod was maxed out and the neck needed shimming. That’s when I blew out my left shoulder falling on ice. Once I healed enough to start playing again, the reach to the first fret wasn’t pain-free, so I bought a 2013 faded cherry SG. I’ve been buying and playing nothing but shorties ever since. The strings are off the repro Jazz, which is now in storage.

Pro tip - find someone who doesn’t mind you playing bass. It’s cheaper in the long run.

This is starting to look pretty good

Did you polish frets also, or did they come in that good of shape? It’s looking lovely though. Not shabby for a $130 bass :sunglasses:

Oh my goodness, some serious Bass Porn in this thread, wow! Let me go in the other direction for a moment. I have a history of jumping into the deep end of expensive hobbies, and then not following through. I wanted to try learning bass, but really wasn’t sure if I would take to it or not. My financial situation is in flux at the moment, so I definitely could not spend a lot.

I sold off some gaming gear, and picked up this Donner DPB-510S, and paired it with a Fender Rumble 40. Bought it from Amazon because of their robust return policy. I figured if something was wrong with it or if I just didn’t enjoy learning, I would return it, no harm no foul. It came with a gig bag, a strap, a cable, and “free” online lessons that I haven’t checked out because I am here instead.

So far it’s been pretty great, just what I needed! It sounds good and plays comfortably, as much as I can judge. Seemed pretty well set up right out of the box, although I just noticed last night that the strings might be a touch too close to the second fret; If I play a long note on the first fret of the E string, I get some ringing after 2 quarter notes of time. Turns out the E string makes contact with the 2nd fret after those 2 beats, and rings. So I am going to do the setup as described in Josh’s video. But overall this seems like just what I needed, and a great deal at $135.

The included strap is bare nylon and was irritating my neck, so I spent $20 on a new Lekato strap, which is more comfortable.

And there you go! I have gotten into the hobby “on the cheap”, and so far have avoided any GAS symptoms. But I should STOP looking at bass porn, because…

Hannibal Lecter: No! He covets. That is his nature. And how do we begin to covet, Clarice? Do we seek out things to covet? Make an effort to answer now.
Clarice Starling: No. We just…
Hannibal Lecter: No. We begin by coveting what we see every day.

Yep I polished them.

And yes, one amazing buy for sure

Very cool. Going off of what you describe, I’d pay particular attention to setting your action. First guess as to where the buzzing is coming from is the action is too low.

I took this photo a while back because I happened to like the way the light was streaming in. Just came across it today and thought I’d share.

Letting this one come up to temp a bit before I fiddle with it. It’s 20 degrees out and the back of the UPS truck isn’t climate controlled. I’ll throw the better strings on after work today.

Thank you, so far chords feel easier on the fingers to play than a regular 6 string but that string spacing is no joke. It’s the same as a guitar but the strings themselves are thicker so there’s less wiggle room before you hit other strings. I guess the flipside is that it sounds like 2 and 3 note chords are the way to go. Open strumming sounds like strumming a bass. I’ve got a few patches in my GX-10 specifically for this already. One for Robin Guthrie’s settings and another one for Bobby Smith. The Cocteau Twins one sounds awesome. I played a little bit with the bass vi line for To Wish Impossible Things and tbh kinda prefer it with the Robin Guthrie patch. A bit dreamier.

something really ironic here, remembering geddy himself (i believe in his bass book) talking about case queen basses that nobody ever played, and geddy saying “i’ll play it, i’ll play the shit out of it” or something to that effect
