My American Fender Jazz bass.

My newest purchase, TMB30. I haven’t even taken the plastic off of the pickguard yet. Truth is that I can’t stop playing it long enough to bother with it. I have some observations and thoughts about this bass that may be helpful to folks that are looking at these; but, I don’t think this is the right thread to discuss that.

When you tire of that colour I can give you some pointers

@Barney Nice! You painted the whole thing?! I see new hardware, except maybe the knobs.
Are those the stock pickups or are they new too?

Holy crap! That’s gorgeous, and the Purple crush is just delicious. Too bad @Koldunya is not around much to see this. Congrats!

You’ve got Skillz @Barney. If you are my next door neighbor we’d have a small custom shop, :joy:

@buzzroberts It was a little project I did to teach myself how to spray nitrocellulose from a can. I did it on a cheap bass because then the pressure was off. Turned out OK for my first go. Lots learned.

Details below, follow the thread down for the complete build if you’re interested.

I’m making a custom bookshelf for a client @Al1885 and using acrylic epoxy for the first time to fill in the knots, cracks etc on the reclaimed lumber he provided. The wood came from an old barn, so it’s full of nail holes and it was all cupped, bowed and twisted like crazy. Took a bit of work to plane it to thickness and get it straight enough to make furniture out of. It would be cool to use this in a bass build I think.

That’s a nice play area my man. Definitely not mine as mine would have a few of my fingertips scattered around lol.

That looks like it has some nice grain patterns are you thinking about making a body?

No @Al1885 all the wood is for the customer’s bookshelf. But working with epoxy that you can colour for the first time has given me some ideas for a future project.

No spare time at the minute though.

It was a bit of a life dream fullfilled. Took 5 years to get it. Has reincentivized me to practice daily.

Wanna see my basses, eh?
Here’s #1, my first bass from 8th grade, a '70 Univox 'Lectra I got as a Xmas present. A year or two ago I had the local music shop’s luthiers do an electronics clean up and set up. Plugged it into one of the store’s amps and I couldn’t believe how great it sounded. I don’t care for the scroll headstock - makes it hard to find a case - but some folks like them.

Next, my '64 Jazz Bass, which I’ve had since 1976 or so. Wife says this one doesn’t leave the house anymore due risk of some drunk or drug addict stealing it.

My Squier VI. A 2014, purchased in May, 2015. Beatles used the Fender version, as did Jack Bruce, so that’s good enough for me. A lot of fun to play and a unique feel and sound. Most folks report intonation issues with the stock bridges but I’ve had no problems at all.

My personal favorite, my '67 EB-3. I always wanted one as I’m a HUGE Jack Bruce fan. The previous owner of this one was a cabinet maker in Idaho. He had it disassembled on his workbench to refinish it but died with it in pieces. His bandmates sold it for his widow. I bought it in August, 2015 and had that music shop above reassemble it. It’s tones are far more versatile than their reputation. I play out with this one but it doesn’t leave from my shoulder. Maybe time to leave this one home too.

An '08 Squier VM Jazz Fretless. Purchased Oct, 2015. I use it a lot in an acoustic setting to get an upright bass kind of tone, on Bad Company songs as well as “Sledgehammer”

Here’s something different. It’s a 1998 Danelectro double neck. Originally a 12/6 but I found a matching Dano bass neck and had the 6-string converted to a “Bass VI,” like the Squier above. Like Geddy Lee but on the cheap. Swapping back and forth between the bass and 6-string is a simple bolt on operation as the neck heels are the same size. I’d like to modify the 12-string to “Rickenbacker style” stringing but can’t find the proper aluminum nut.

As said above, wife won’t let the '64 JB leave the house, so found an '88 MIJ JB in 2020. It’s a '62 reissue. I put a Hipshot tuner on the low E.

My most recent acquisition, a 2004 ((I think) Line6 Variax 700 bass (and a JTV-59 Variax on the left. Purchased Oct, 2022.

That’s it for now. I have a couple more but no photos to speak of.

As a guy who lives in an apartment, a shop like that is like has me re-thinking my decision to rent rather than own. Nice shop with lots of room to work on more bass builds, right? (hint, hint).

I have the perfect solution for you. I’ll keep it here at my place and your wife can rest assured that someone will be keeping a close eye on it at all times. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

My Acinonyx came in today. It has the feel I was looking for when I decided I wanted to upgrade, so I’m really happy about that. However, it has a crack in the finish near the neck. I think I’m going to keep it anyways, but I’m bummed out about it.
