Hey @itsratso

I use to work at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville in the Neonatal Intensive Care and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

I really liked the NICU because the premature babies were so tiny it was almost like working on a science project rather than an average baby.

I didn’t enjoy the PICU as much because the children were more grown up with personalities. And believe me the worst of the worst came in there. It was hard to see the kids suffering like that.

It was good to make a contribution to helping them though.

yeah, that’s a whole different world than what I do. being orthopedics we have it pretty good, our kids are generally healthy and 99% of our stories have happy endings. they’re mostly older kids/teens too. thanx for all you do, it’s not easy :+1:

I work as a CBT Therapist for the NHS. My degree was in biochemistry and I initially worked in labs. I have also been in a circus (no animals) made art, DJd and promoted bands, including the Buzzcocks, done up houses, been a photographer and done workshops.

I can also be found running, cycling horse riding and general partying.
But my dream is to play bass, at least for one song on stage.
Its interesting seeing what others do.

Yet another IT guy here! Did 8 years in the Navy, then 7 years as an IT Associate for a clean energy company starting off in helpdesk and then building up on that by doing some switch and firewall configs as well as some IT project management. Now starting into my second year working remote as a helpdesk manager for an ad agency.

Bought a bass many, many years ago but never really practiced it, but my daughter got a guitar for Christmas and I thought it would be really fun to learn instruments at the same time so we can eventually jam together

Learning the bass to switch off from tech when not working!

I’m still the director of IT for Yokosuka Naval Base but I have recently taken on Director of Fleet and Family Readiness so I’m in charge of all the clubs, gyms, athletics, youth programs, child care, military housing, counseling, family advocacy, sexual assault programs, alcohol incidents, domestic violence…its a handful. The base is basically a city of 26K people and except for the internal processes, security and ship movement governing the rest of it falls to me. Honestly I thought the IT shop and my team of eight was awesome, now I have 800+ employees this is what work looks like…not a fan.

Wow @Tokyo_Rat

That is a ton of responsibility! I hope for you that you find plenty of time to follow your bass studies and that it gives you many hours of pleasure and escape. Haha

We have so many IT people here! It’s fascinating.

Thank you Darryl…my playing is now restricted to weekends hopefully things will settle down and we’ll get some talent in to help me out. Right now I’m trying to be like a duck…smooth on the top working like hell underneath.

That’s a hell of an expansion of responsibility dude. I would say good luck but the commander clearly has the confidence in you to execute. You don’t need the luck.

I just picked up expanded scope myself, but I am only leading 21 peeps, not 800.

I was a linux enthousiast (still am) which dabbled in webdesign and print as a freelancer, before switching to sysadmin after a specialized IT course.
I’m now working for a subsidiary of a larger french company and pretty much enjoy breaking their things when I’m not fixing them. And with that, there you have it : another IT guy.

Another IT guy here… I think you’ll find a disproportionate number of IT people on any internet forum, for obvious reasons.

things i never thought I’d have to deal with generally come from the child development center, every bump, allergic reaction, run away, you name it. Wanting to house prisoners in my unaccompanied housing, employee absent from work issues, social media, VIPs, this group thinks they are under appreciated, this group dislike that group…LOL. Howard, if you know anyone wanting to stay in Japan I’ve got some seeking SOFA positions opening soon.

I retired four years ago journeyman fabricator in sign industry, Las Vegas has lot of my work the Paris ballon on the strip was one of the larger ones, Ceasars palace flamingo casinos many others this required lot of electrical sheetmetal knowledge. From there I went to a large a German company Siemens in Dallas area at their postal automation/ Worldwide Airport baggage operations /UPS, Fed ex. automated conveyors All one location. I was a floor supervisor working to keep the ball rolling any problem became my problem I was a human pinball. countless job interviews countless layoffs. I learned to never look at peoples family pictures knowing how volatile the environment was there, but on the side learned stock trading! was able to retire at 62. Thats when I found the bass. Such a broad range of careers in here, pretty cool reading about what you guys all do, especially @DaveT, it sounds like you’ve lived a really interesting life and I am envious that your job was able to take you to so many places!

I am an independent contractor, I mostly do flooring (hardwood, carpet, vinyl) which is not fun or enjoyable whatsoever but it pays well and it’s the trade I learned from my dad growing up. Looking at you @autumnsdad1990, wish I would have become an electrician instead  My family also owns a bar/restaurant next to the baseball & football stadiums so often times I find myself working there as well, especially during football season and on huge events. We get the whole MLB All-Star week this year so I suspect it will. be mayhem!

I have been in accounting my entire working career. Even during my 11 years in the U S Navy, I was a Disbursing Clerk (payroll and accounting). Got out after back-to-back tours for Desert Shield and Desert Storm when the military started their force reductions. Biggest mistake in my life! I now have a Masters degree in accounting and work as Senior Accountant for a large retail grocer.
