Had a great week up in Rochester, NY where we announced our new venture we have been furiously working on since I was laid off at that blue soda company. Turns out I am really digging not working there anylonger. @mgoldst - did you happen to catch this on the news Friday?
I’m a management consultant and have been in the industry for the past 27 years. Prior to that I spent a number of years in the U.K. quarrying industry (blowing up rocks, crushing them, coating them in bitumen and then selling them…)
My Bachelors is in Geology - history of the world - and I also have an MBA.
Consulting has taken me all over the world, quite literally, and I have worked for some amazing clients. I genuinely think that a career in consulting has enabled me to see and work in environments that ‘normal’ people just never get to see, from offshore oil & gas production to contact centres, from food manufacturing to cement manufacturing, from high tech electronics to aircraft maintenance.
As with many jobs, it’s all about the people: the clients, the colleagues, the teams I’ve had the privilege to work with. Although I don’t travel as much as I used to - while travel can sound cool, it can play havoc with a personal / family life - the variety is addictive…
I’m an artist. Most specifically I’m a printmaker, and I do all sorts of printmaking and fine art bookbinding (etching, linocut, woodcut, screen printing, etc.). If it’s ok to share my website, you can see some of my work here.
As is probably fairly obvious, this does not pay well or often. Back when we lived in Australia I topped up my income by working in a printmaking supply shop, and prior to that I did web design, worked at various government run art galleries and libraries, random retail, and I started out as a copywriter in advertising (liked writing, hated advertising). When we moved overseas seven years ago, I wasn’t allowed to work for 10 months while my visa was processed, so I started making art process videos on YouTube. For a few years as well, I continued to do design work for my old printmaking supply shop, but covid killed that (not entirely sorry to see it go). Got a part time job for a while as an assistant framer, then we moved a year ago and I’m giving the art thing a red hot go. I’m incredibly lucky in that Ireland started a large scale three year trial for a Basic Arts Income a year ago, and I was randomly selected for the trial. Most of the 2000 people getting paid on the trial are remaining anonymous (for pretty good reasons, tbh), but I’m one of a handful who don’t mind talking about it. So yeah, I get paid to foster my own self employed creative career!
Fire Controlman in the Navy for 20 years. Made fire with weapon systems not put out fires. Side job was security. Now I am a Field Service Engineer for a OEM Lithotripter Company. I work on Electronics and X-Ray equipment. I went from guns and missiles to breaking kidney stones. The last 23 years since retiring from the Navy, I’ve been trying to catch up on all the hobbies I missed as a young man going out to sea. I mess around with Hot Rods, guns and now Bass!
