I know it’s only been a couple of days, but has anyone heard from Toby?

Was wondering the same thing, @eric.kiser . . .

Still in hospital would be my guess.

Nope. Nopedy hears from him, he was under strict radio silence

I am surprised at how painful it has been this far.
Recovery should be no more then a couple weeks, but the first 5-7 days are no walk in the park.

I think I underestimated it. Before the next knee * will have a firm plan in ent, a place, and that will mean a lot more drugs for the firset few days while I am unable to do any PT. Just cuz I have to lay with my knee being completely flat for a week (do it doesn’t heal with a bend in the knee, something that Horta extremely, and can bore your pants off……
There has to be some drugs rgat will make they enjoyable. Possibly Ketamine

Anyway, I am on day 3, should be home by day 14 or 21
day., around the 19th thru the 22nd.
Thanks for all the well wishes

thanks, it was a rougher road then I had expected, mainly cuz I had been informed from others who have had the surgery, some recently, like my mom ,last November, and she has has a complete 100% recovery from the operation, as has have everybody else the I know who as had a knee replcement surgery.
I was told that Knee replacement is the number one surgery in the county, with 600 successfully operations a year in the US alone.

I was warned, sort of, from my cousin and mom, it will suck for a couple weeks, but then it get better.

What I was not prepared for was from about 4 hours to 8 hours after the surgery, and I don’t know fir sure, but that Ould possibly have been the worst pain I have ever felt.

see, this surgeon at least, I am not sure if it is common practice across te board, but this surgeon uses a little TRICK I would like to call it. Like an epidural they give pregnant woman, he doesn’t actually put a tube in your spine and leaf a steady flow for meds, but he gives a series (4 or 5 if my count was correct) of local anesthetic shots. so in 10=15 minutes, you can’t fee below your waist, and you can’t even move your feet.
then they put you out for the surgery.
Once you wake up. you are still numb and can only feel the incision, and I kept asking for more and more pain Eds cuz it hurt really bad.
I asked her what she was giving me and she said Dilauded, I asked how much and she said 1mg. I told her forget that baby stuff, get me some retinal, an just know me out til this recovery room stuff is over, and I am pretty sure she did coz I was waking up in my hospital room about an our later, with my mom and dad and cousin by my side, and for a few minutes it was OK, the Dilauded they put me back on seemed to be doing trick.
UNTL
slowly over about 15 min the local anesthetic started wearing off, an I was literally screaming in pain. The nurse kept coming in and giing me booster (bolus) ahots of dilaudid, but it was seriously not helping, lost making it worse over time. No Joke, it hurt so bad I literally screaming in tears.
The nurse said it was all she could do for me until the pain Dr got there and she was paging him non stop.
He finally showed up and increased the Dilaudid to 2mg, which literally felt like it was making ting worse (the local anesthetic was almost completely gone at this time) and I was still screaming in pain.
The nurse came in and gave me 2mg Xanax and said hopefully this will calm you down til the Dr gets back. about 15. min later, felt about 2% better but still screaming in pain.
The Dr got back and said he was giving me everything ne could. I told I’m Bull Shit, give me some Fentanyl, the will knock me right out and I will be find for a good hour , an keep giving it to me thru the night and re-evaluate the pain in the morning. He refused. I told him that I have had Fentanyl I the hospital almost every-time that I have in the hospital in the past 5 years and it works wonders.

He said, but it is hard to get you off.
I told him, no, just do like every other Dr who has treated me for surgery or major injury, or life support ha s done for the last 5 years, then after 2-3 ays tops they stop me back to dilated, and then before I leave the hospital, they have me down to Oral Oxycodone.

he refused the Fentynal, but added 5mg of vallium on to f the Xanax, which is even less safe then using Fentynal for a few days, and added Oxycodone 15mg every 6 hours.
I was still screaming bloody murder (not cuz. wanted meds, cuz I was I legit excruciating pain. I at least asked him to up the soy to 30mg, to which he said no, but he would increase the time in which he would dose me the 15 to every 4 hours. STILL not enough, and I was literally crying non stop in pain, it hurt so fuckig bad. He came back, I asled i him to give me, no I begged for him to give me 30mb oxy again, and he refuse, but upped my doe to 3 hours (the same thing as 30mg every 6 hours, so I fail to see his logic), a then also begged hm again to switch the deluded to Fontanel, just 50 micrograms, every hour ( he was doing 1mg of deluded even hour and I knew / know from experience, from other doctors in other hospitals that have explained it to me, the fentanyl time per hour works better, and is much easier to get patients off to deluded or even ox after a short time, but there I a 2-4 day window you need to use it in, and then even 2 days after being on Fentynal, you ca send patients home with small, 3-4x per day smaller pills then what is us in the hospital, so he could have done the feat, 2-4 days, dilaudid 1-2 days, then oxy and sent me to the nursing home with lower doses of oxy even 4-6 hours.

No, he kept me on deluded until the ay I left the hospital, increased my Xanax to 3x per day, and added 5mg Valium 3 x per day and sent me to the nursing home still in very much pain, having them to re-evaluate me and add to what he had, cuz they couldn’t change his orders, but added small extra pain meds to my plan.

my whole idea of this trip was to come home on less to zero meds.
Now I have another DR. Know It all who is really not. trained will or up t current standards, screwing me up, and sending me home on more meds then wen I want in.

fortunately, I have a great PCP who I also my Pain manager, and I will se him this week, and he will work wonders with me again to titrate off this crap. My plan is (if possible, but not going to pus h if it if it is not doable) is to be off all meds when I go in for my 2nd knee replacement surgery within the next 3 months or so.

The big question (for the PCP dr, and my surgeon now is, should I do the hip first, but it caused all sorts of pain from general recovery to much of my physical rehab). I didn’t think it wold be the bad, but at times it hurt 10X worse them my knee.

Kep in this mind, this is the knee that I had a compound fracture of the femur. and they operated fro the hip, drilling thru Th. bones, and ramming in a titanium rod, with 3 screws holding the rod in place, and keeping the rod at the right length of the leg, and then screwed into the knee in two places, again, to keep the leg the proper length apart while the bone grew back around the rod. I took x-rays at every dr check up once every 2-4 months and slowly watched it grow bak to gather and fill around the rod .

once it was safe grown around the rod, they did a retraction surgery, from which I understand they pushed my face into a pillow with my ass sticking up, and they make abut a 4 inch incision on my hip, remove the screws, make incisions on t knee area to remove the other screws, and once they have the screws removed, use like a automotive block puller where they thread something into the end of the rod by eat hip, and use a puller, where they keep kayaking it up, smacking into the end of the pole, and then dong it all over again until they get the rod out of your leg.

that is another year recovery, where you go to the dr every 2-4 weeks and look at x rays to make sue things are progresing.

I can be driving anywhere from 30 min to 4 hours and my hip will go completely dead, to where I need to get around ad all around. I have always known it was a problem, but until know, I was not sure so sure f it wold need a hip replacement.

Now if they say hip reconstructive surgery, I will finish up =that conversation with a HARD NO, but if they say replacement, I am all over it.

so, as is the fun and games and and good times of my life.

I am happy to report now, that both the knee and hip are doing much better, but I am still on this garage of meds, tha I will have to wait to se my PCP / Pain dr next week to go over. some I still need, some are ridiculous.

They’re giving you Ketamine? I’ve been on Oxycodone since September and so far so good.

Let us know how you’re doing, ok? I thought you were still in hospital, but if you’re home already that’s great . . .

Cheers

Nope, the bastards wouldn’t give me special K. They keep me o low doses of oxycodone and it’s been horrible.

This hospital is old, Snd Zi hope to do my next one in a newer hospital, one tgat is not afraid of drug therapy.

Oh well, regardless, progress is being made, just not as enjoyable as it could have been.

I should transfer to a rehab facility / assisted living today, and If not, maybe I will just be home by the end of the week.
