McGrath does. If you’ve got the coin, they’ll custom make you one and theyve got some crazy pants pickup configs, besides double P.
Very roughly, how much we talking? I know it depends on hardware, etc., which is why I said ‘very roughly’.
Playing with their configurator online I’ve built basses from about $2k - $3.5k freedumb dollars.

Thank you. I might have to take a looksee at their website. I’m waiting to see if my friends in Japan can organise something with a local geeetar and bass builder but if that doesn’t pan out, I at least now have another option

Just been on their website, £2,650 which is about US$3,500. Not cheap but could be worth a punt.
If I decide to go for it, it’ll probably end up a bassbuzz collaboration project as I won’t know which bridge, pick ups, etc. to choose from. I’ll have to get some opinions from members here.

That’s the same problem that I have. The level of customization is awesome, but I don’t know what a Trickfish or EMG preamp sound like well enough to know which one is going to work best for me, same with pickups. I’ve banked on the fact that if / when that time came I could ask @howard to build one and that’s going to 99% work the best for me (we’re both post-punk bassists).
The build I lean towards has the neck mudbucker, reverse P in the middle position, regular P in the bridge position.

Howard for sure, but there’s a few others here who’ve had custom basses built so I’d hope they’d chip in, too.
Also, my tutor has had custom basses built here and he’s been watching me play for a couple years now, so he would have a good idea.
I love the twin P arrangement but they’d have to be the same orientation, either both regular or both reverse. Having them different would drive me crackers. Actually, I’m wondering if they could build one with three P pick ups?

Three pickups would be interesting but you would want them wound appropriately (bridge pickups usually have more windings). Then you need a seven way switch to get all the pickup combinations.
I think two pickups with a five-way switch would be more interesting:
- front
- back
- front + back
- top front + bottom back
- top back + bottom front
Then push it through a nice simple preamp (like a 2 band stingray).

I saw a band this past weekend called shovelhead. The bass player had a Double P Spector. I didn’t get a chance to talk to him. I hope to catch them again!

That Spector Double P is weighing heavy on my mind. My searches don’t reveal much. Has anyone heard of these? Are they custom shop builds?
