You have enough spare parts to open your own shop now, @Al1885

Sort of upgraded today. I finally found a home for the Lemmy signature strings on the new thumb bass as the ones she came with were very tired. Certainly sounds a lot brightly with the new strings and to my amazement I’m really starting to enjoy playing round wounds! Never thought I’d say that :joy:
I would love to have known what strings were on the thumb when I got her as although they were tired they were really great to play. I would reckon they were 105-50 or possibly even 100-45 ,rounds and were oh so easy to play. The previous owner is trying to remember what he put on but no luck so far

Brand new round wounds while sounds crisp and bright, they don’t feel very good. They are too course and feel too rough on the fingers. It takes quite sometimes to break them in just right. Once they have “aged” or what I like to call “seasoned” (the same way you seasoned your cast iron pans) enough they feel great, they may not sound like “rounds” but feels awesome. I heard that when the bassist from Abba restrings his bass he’d give that to a friend(s) to play/gig for a couple of years before returning them to him then he’ll use that bass for touring.

Ok the second one is done yesterday, I needed to routed out extra room for battery. Here it is. It’s funny I just talked about new round wounds, this one feels like sand paper, I put some fingerease spray and finger glide powder it feels a bit better probably needs a couple more coats, lol.

This one is on deck for today(hopefully)

I seriously wonder what brand you are using - good rounds do not feel this way

Elsewise, they may feel this way but “the wearer” doesn’t mind/enjoys the feel. I’m like that with Rotosound RL66 uncoated SS strings. I mean, they’re the definition of a cheese grater, but I think they feel and sound wonderful.

Slinky usually for squier. Sometimes d’addirio but mostly Ernie Ball of some sort. I do like the coated ones but usually forget to order ahead of time. I do have a dozen of slinkies on hand.

just put a set of Slinkies on my Stream 1005, and they feel fine but are very bright. Just WOW bright

Never been a fan of Ernie Ball strings - much prefer D’Addario myself. Slinkys and Super Slinkys aren’t bad but definitely don’t feel as good as D’Addario EXL’s or NYXL’s to me.

Same here. Just put a set of Hybrid Slinky’s I had lying around on my Cort Action PJ. They sound fine, but I don’t like the way they feel. The next set are going to be D’Addarios again.

So, Musique Red One has finally shipped my Seymour Duncan Steve Harris P-pups. Yay! It’s only been 4 months.

My Dragonfire Guitars Split Coil AlNiCo pups are also on the way. Ordered them barely a week ago:

I see soldering and copper taping in my future.

So the SH pickups from RedOne are “out for delivery” by UPS today… after 4 months to the day. DragonFire Pickups, ordered last week, still beat them.

I have a question for @terb or @DaveT . The wire coils look like they’re well done, but the wires coming off of them look quite thin and prone to damage. Would it be a good idea to pot these pickups, i.e. embed them in resin? Or should I just be careful in handling them?

no. keep them as they are.

Thank you @terb . And a belated welcome back to the forum BTW after your time away.

My new Stream 1005 bass, hate the Ernie Balls on it. Okay, my new strings came in, a set of Fodera, and NYXL. Now I have to choose! And I don’t know which ones.

ugh.

NYXL are great IMO

Basically my favorite rounds

Be interested what you think of the Fodera ones @Wombat-metal
Keep hearing about them elsewhere but the reports are lacking in much detail.

I’ve seen a lot of good things about Fodera, which is why I’m trying them out. I ended up putting the NYXLs on the 1005, which means I’ll likely put the Foderas on the 205 which should be here next week

I also have a 4 string set, which will go on my Surveyor if the pickup ever ships from Delano. Grrr…
