Kings of Leon. Working on a couple. I can do golden restless age at speed now, but still working on happy alone and Joe’s head.
It’s finally time to learn Cult of Personality. I believe I’m ready now. I can play the main riff at full speed but not as clean as I’d like it to be yet. But I really think I can learn it in a month ![]()
Oh! I just taught myself the intro. It’s so nice to play!
It’s fun, isn’t it! The challenge I’m having with it is a) to get exactly the notes right (I can get most, but seldom all), b) the rhythmic placing of the notes, and c) for the rest of the songs, all Duff’s fills!!
I can play the main structure and put in my own simple fills - say a 5th, or an octave, but playing what Duff plays, maaaan, that’s hard!!
I’m working on the bass solo for In a Lonely Place by New Order today. After spending the evening trying to find a pattern in there, I’ve come to the conclusion that Hooky was on cocaine and winging it the studio. There are 4/5 different repeating patterns with 2/3 little fills between them that he just kinda played in no order (
) whatsoever. He will play the different fills back to back sometimes, or the meatier parts of the solo he played back to back once or twice. I’m just going to have to hard memorize this thing.
I don’t have a question, I’m just venting and chuckling a little.
That is an under appreciated song. I love the Movement era stuff.
I realized yesterday that I have yet to learn my favorite Queen song. It’s got a great bassline. The verses and the chorus are easy enough to play and the bridge is, also simple in the grand scheme of things but because it’s more of a solo-ish sound than a groove it’s been a bit challenging to get it cemented into my brain to memorize.
Oh, man. I think i screwed up. My latest attempt is the conjuring by megadeth. And (at least for me) this thing is a beast. Thus far i can only do it at 75%, and mistake free doesn’t play into that.
I May have bitten off more than i can chew this time. Might have to dial back and try some other stuff for a while-but it’s not a bad thing.
Maybe i oughta listen to the song and see if i actually like it. I still haven’t done that.
Yeah, seems important. Mine is Only Shallow by My Bloody Valentine. It’s been a few months and I still nope out before I get to the first verse. Those darn chords. Some of the covers I’m doing are specifically to work my way towards that one.
i have a whole ass list of like 20+ songs to learn lol, top prioritys rn are:
Roxanne - The Police
Testify - Rage Against The Machine
The Chain - Fleetwood Mac
Another Brick In The Wall - Pink Floyd
Walk - Pantera
This is a worthy list of opponents, my friend.
I’ll look that up. I’ve never heard of them-but my circle is small. Being afraid to go outside can do that to a person.
Oof. I see in the 11th bar there is a chord that is 5thg/8thd. That’s a good stretch. I don’t think i can do that. I got them little snausage fingers. Best of luck on that.
Oh, it’s totally possible. Debbie Googe doesn’t have Josh Yeti fingers. I’ve got longish digits myself. I can get that stretch in, but not at full speed.
But that’s totally OK. There are a few songs I’m working through at the moment that will take quite a bit of time till I can play the whole thing competently.
It’s still enjoyable to have a go. Like you said, you can switch in and out … and it feels really good when you go back to it and are able to play a bit more.
Barracuda. I can play it fairly well at 75% speed (which I’m very proud of, this song is hard for me) but i can’t chug that fast with my fingers at 100% and I’m not good enough with a pick to do the fills and quick note changes
I’m also in the camp of having a list I’m working on.
Currently:
“Oye Como Va” as per Santana - soooo much fun as a strong beginner. Solid application of a lot of concepts I’m working on.
“Under the Milky Way” by The Church - this is just simple fun that I can play with my wife (brushing off her guitar skills)
“Money” - my big new challenge.
Regular rotation that I’ve got pretty well, but keep brushing up my skills on:
“Sweet Jane” as per Cowboy Junkies
“Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star. Really working on playing soft and smooth.
“Freedom at 21” by Jack White. Another to play with my wife. My first song to really dissect on my own. Using it to learn a lot about coaxing out different tones.
I am eyeing this one.
…soon.
I’m working on a pair of Radiohead songs atm (Videotape and Codex). They’re easy enough. The weird little time shifts they like doing are the hardest part of playing them. Practicing those songs for an hour nonstop though… it feels like I had my soul ripped out and stomped on.
I have started to learn all of the songs of In Utero (Nirvana album)…about 3-4 songs into it, with bits from another 3-4 started…These songs are all I am playing at the moment and I have also been learning more about the recording of the album and Krists playing style which has increased the experience
Should be able to play all songs (from memory) by the end of this [hopefully at a level ‘4’ or ‘5’ level]
