I’m not ideologically opposed to it, but I’m not sure adding an extra thing is going to be a net benefit in a week. I do plan on giving it a shot since it seems like it would be closer to the original sound.
Working hardest on “Lips Like Sugar” by Echo and the Bunnymen right now. Looking at all of the tabs and… I think all of them are wrong. They all seem to have it in Bm, but I’m pretty sure it’s in Bm pentatonic.
They all seem to occasionally grab the G (in Bm, but not pentatonic) when doing the drop down and run up in the main riff, and I hear it as the F. It’s confusing the hell out of me.
Also there’s a bunch of fast chord runs in the pre-chorus that are challenging, but I think I figured out how to outline that movement with fewer notes to simplify it.
(Actually working on several songs, because I appear to have SUCESSFULLY FORMED A BAND, but this is the one that’s giving me the most trouble.)
Mr Brightside
Love that one.
The “band” I’m playing in (the quotes are doing some heavy lifting here) offered up “After Dark” by Tito and Tarantula.
Simple enough song, but it’s one where the drums/vocals/guitars don’t predict the transitions (at least to my novice ear), so I’m still messing it up if I give it a go without the tab in front of me, god forbid I have to start counting bars.
Learned a few new songs this past week. Black Pumas “Fire”, came up up with a fun walking bassline for it. “Touch the Sky” from the same album is a beautiful song. Figured out my own bassline again, and it’s very repetitive, but it suits the song and I get in to a trance playing that one. Feels like I’m dancing with my fingers. I love it. Anyone not familiar with Black Pumas should look up their song “Colors”. I think any bassist will love that song.
Looked up the chords for Bob Seger’s “Fire Down Below” yesterday and sorted out a swampy/gallopy (?) bassline for it. Too much fun. I reckon “Sunspot Baby” is next.
That’s so awesome. Not many songs in 3/4 nowadays. The harmonica solo and bass sync is fun.
I’d love a crack at Cloud Funding, that intro is just delicious. it feels like the time signature change through out the song, holy crap that’s fun.
My keyboard player has been working on this pet project for a while now sequencing this beast for a 4 maybe 5 piece band. He just told us to start practicing our part because he’s close to getting it done. That’s so awesome.
That said he said this twice before last year, ![]()
Its absolutely amazing that song.
Hard also… been playing it on BTB806MS. Couldn’t find a decent priced fretless 6 for that song.
Might buy a SRD905F and use the melody line(requires the high C) and play the other line.
Among a few others we have NIB on the jam list.
Trying to get the noodly intro down, I have a tab but I think it is more about the tone and rhythm on this one. Sounds like a guy mumbling into his beard. I’m not going to fade out 1/2 way through like on the record tho.
The rest of the song is fun.
I could play all of the melody except for one on my 4 string it’s the 25th fret which is funny because I could play that on my Neck Through Warwick Katana as it has enough room for me to press down as there’s a ramp from the fingerboard down to the body.
Personally I would not get a 6 string bass for that note especially if you are going for a fretless. If I must play that note I’d either bend the 24th half step or false harmonic it. A plentiful 5 string fretless would do the job. As the matter of fact since you like the Ibanez, I highly recommend the Gary Willis model, the ramp is a continuation of the fingerboard, I bet you can squeeze in a few notes pass the 24th, ![]()
The transcription I have for the two tracks, shows that there are loads played in the high C.
I can play it somewhat ok on my BTB with rounds… but fingers burn after a few tries. There’s also a few HOs I need to improve. The good side of this “backing” track is that only uses D G and C.
This part is where I need more exercise and precision in… but I’d say I am 65% half the way… but on lower bpm.
The other track is in a way easier, but has some fun consecutive slides. Uses B E A D strings.
This again according to the transcriptions I have. They were done by a double bassist I met.
I was just play along quick and dirty style trying to figure out the range. That’s such a specific specialty bass to play this song. It’s almost cheaper to get 2 5 string Fretless and tune it differently.
Tbh… the fretless 5 is becoming a reality. Not the Gary Willis…though I do love it and it looks awesome.
This was also an option for a while:
I had seen a SRF706 in a shop that didn’t want to send to Ireland… nobody in Ireland or some shops also had one at a decent price… saw people asking for prices around the 1800€
There were also some Marcus Millers in the 700s, that I liked… but… pretty much all went out of stock… except a white
But I did fall in love for the SRD905F… hearing some videos and talking to an owner… that will be the one coming.
30 “fret” fretless… darker lines, fingerboard is the same as my BTB.
Will be my last bass for a very long while… as Santa might bring also an EDrum kit… (daughter wanted us to buy her one yesterday in a toy shop… plastic… ugly and too many colours for about 150€… I managed to get a way better one for a nice price with Black Friday deals)… so yeah… some stuff to reorganize to pull all this. ![]()
I love how you put that in there so non-chalantly as if that is something we just do, each day and every day ![]()
I just picked this one up tonight and it’s a trip to play. So far, I’ve got pretty heavy chorus, reverb, delay, and I’ve got my pickups set up in parallel for the first chunk of the song which is mostly these dreamy sounding slides. There’s a break going into the outro where I’m turning down the reverb to normal, turning off the delay and chorus and switching my pickups to series to get a sharper tone. It’s the first time that I’ll be adjusting my pedals mid song. They’re all on my desk, not a board on the floor (so I generally can’t stomp them off). It’s easy to play but a lot of fun between those slides and redoing my signal chain.
cool! Love Blur.
Score a huge win here for all digital ITB effects plus DAW automation, makes this kind of thing much easier - actually very very easy. Next best are pedals that take a MIDI In but that’s a distant second.
My end goal is to play live, so learning to do this stuff on the fly the analog way is something I need to be able to do. I am looking at one of those new Boss GX-10’s though and may throw one of those in my rotation. The cost is pretty close to a decent synth pedal and octave plus I get all those other goodies to play around with.
DAWs work great live, ask any synth player ![]()
Seriously I have never gigged without a computer, even 30 years ago we were automating with Master Tracks Pro
Currently working on learning this :
Hall and Oates - You Make my Dreams Come True
(bassless track I’m using to practice with)
Its a fun boppy bass line with neat syncopated hits. ![]()
Should be fun, most tabs I’ve found don’t get the expression right… ( the feel of how its played )
We’ll see how it ends up ![]()
