Post your covers! (2025)

Thank you John!

Hey Damon! I record video and audio at the same time with OBS studio. I run my bass/effects through a mixer along with the source music (with original bass track removed via Moises) into the computer. A lot of people prefer to use an interface with a DAW, but I find this setup works for me. Great job on the Zombie tune too!!

Forum members @John_E and @PamPurrs (RIP) put together a couple of how-to vidoes that showed me the easiest way to do it. Pam and John’s “How To Record Yourself” Parts 1 & 2 (Audio & Video)

Thanks for the kind words @JustinAndSheba and @JohnF. And thank both of you and @Vader for the link for help with video recording.

Oh, and we all have that issue with the second you hit record your playing falls apart. Pretty sure most of my videos have been like take 4 - with at least one of the earlier ones messed up within the first couple of measures.

Awesome cover @damonjc ! And the video was super cool as well!

@JustinAndSheba oh man, that takes me back! Would have been 7th or 8th grade I think? Man did I wear that cassette out! Great cover of a great song!

Dude, @damonjc ! Nice job, that was great!

Just want to say thanks again for the link. It appears I have some work to do on the recording/editing end as it was a little disconcerting when I recently listened to my White Zombie recording on an iPad and it sounded like :poop:.

Mac with Bose speakers was what I was working with, but on iPad :face_vomiting:

I hope no one worries about offending me here. If it sounds bad please let me know, that’s why I’m posting.

Blimey, you thorn your back for a couple of day and bam! the number of covers here is astonishingly!

Very cool, @faydout!

Blimey, @Ed, this takes me back to those hair metal days! Well played!!

I suspect the answer is yes, we all make mistakes, it just we do multiple takes… at least this is true for me . Well done on the cover, @damonjc!!

That’s low, maaan, low!! :sunglasses:

More coolness, @JohnF! Love it!!

I like this, @fennario, great song choice!!

More hair metal!! Love it, @JustinAndSheba

Gosh, that’s heavy, @damonjc! Well played!! My method for recording and sync’ing the video is fairly simple, but involves two iPhones. I’m recording into GarageBand on the first, while on the second I’m videoing the “performance”. There can be multiple takes . I then bring the video and audio together in iMovie (on one of the iPhones) and basically snip the front end of the video until it’s in sync. It’s a bit trial and error, but after a while, it actually becomes pretty easy.

Sometimes you see me “playing” outside. For those, I’ve pre-recorded the bass track. I then simply play back the recording on one phone, while playing the bass, obviously unamped, to get the video. The outside videos do get strange looks from passers by, but who cares, I’m an “artist”

I’ve said this before, elsewhere in this forum, the fact that the phone in your pocket is also a recording studio and a video editing suite is beyond amazing!

Alice Merton - No Roots (acoustic version) fretless bass cover

On one level, this is a bit of a cheat, in that it’s Alice Merton’s No Roots again. But in my defence, it’s an acoustic version and I’m playing my fretless for an added complication.

Sire V7 fretless into the Hotone Ampero, then on into GarageBand.

I’ve been digging her limited discography on Amazon Music while I work in the kitchen. I like what I’m hearing.

We all have pur own levels of “sounds good enough to post”. Don’t worry too much about audio quality. Almost none of these are being recorded in studio settings. We’re probably all listening primarily to the bass playing, so as long as that is audible in the mix it’s all good.

Sounds great, Duncan! I like the beginning with just the bass and then just the bass and vocals. Also that funky little acoustic jam starting at 3:05 is niiice. Very cool version!

Thanks @sunDOG for the feedback.

Yes, I’ve read your earlier posts on the subject. To be honest, I haven’t wanted to put in the time other than do what is easiest. I foresee my children getting irritated with me for not understanding technology just as I have done with my parents, because that seems the direction I’m going :laugh/cry emoji:

That jams! But I wouldn’t expect anything less from you. Always on point. I echo what @JohnF said at 3:05.

Thanks for helping me understand the culture here @Vader.

However, what I failed to mention is I’m playing with my new toy, the Ampero One (again, @sunDOG I have to thank you for this one) and messing with all of these different tones. So, this whole process for me includes figuring out what sounds good.

One last thing, thanks to everyone for listening to what I post. That’s really it, isn’t it? Such a simple thing, but so meaningful how everyone here takes interest in what others are doing. I mean, my own family won’t listen to me.

Then again, I don’t think my 18-year-old who is up all night studying appreciates me playing in the morning (my office is right below his room).

What is that racket!
MUSIC! BEAUTIFUL MUSIC!

One of the cool things about the covers thread is being exposed to music!

Thanks! That’s my “mix”. In the original, a live acoustic version, it was just guitar and vocal, so I just removed the guitar at the start :sunglasses:

Thanks @damonjc!

Lol, yeah I guess we could do that!
@TheMadBassist excellent cover of the new song, I hadn’t even looked at it to be honest, I’m stuck in the 80’s and 90’s at the moment. But I have seen your challenge, so may well have to consider it now
@damonjc Well done, it sounded great. I can’t help with advice on how to stop your mind wandering, I struggle to stay focussed on anything
@JohnF Very enjoyable well done

Wow, it’s kicking off! Challenge accepted. . .at some point
@sunDOG I know the feeling, I’ve got 6 days of catching up to do. I have actually watched most of these on YouTube already though, so just gotta catch up on here.
Good to hear the acoustic No Roots too, such a catchy tune.
@fennario That was very good. I’ve heard very little Audioslave so have no comparison, but that was a nice chilled song.
@JustinAndSheba a perfect cover, it sounded faultless.
@damonjc Heavy and funky! well played. I sympathise with the camera anxiety, I think we all go through it. Best I can say is, it gets better, and its easier if you can relax a bit and stop caring so much. The quality improves, which sounds counterproductive, but being tense creates mistakes.

I think I’m Paranoid - Garbage
I’ve been working on this for a while, but having just been moved to a different manager (again) at work it seemed like a good time to finish it. The official line is ‘so that they can better support my needs’.
