I’m on my coffee break right now. So either of those sound lovely ![]()
There’s no need for anyone to blow off the strings you dig in favor of shelling out the bread for TI Jazz strings. If what you like works for you, stick with it, and let the beat go on.
Same thing goes for one’s preferred bass model/brand.
We’re each different and we like what we like. ![]()
Did a quick search due to a nagging suspicion of what’s going on with Thomason-Infeld strings availability. Here’s the scoop:
Thomastik-Infeld frequently struggles to meet demand for their premium strings. Because all of their strings are handcrafted in Vienna, Austria, manufacturing is highly complex, and it can take up to two years to develop and produce certain string lines.
Widespread supply chain disruptions and high global demand often result in rolling stock shortages and inventory delays across major specialty suppliers. Buyers frequently experience limited availability, with many popular models appearing temporarily out of stock at major retailers like Shar Music and the Juilliard Store. [1, 2, 3, 4]
So TI has a supply chain and hancrafted-related process bottleneck in their ability to meet world demand across the myriad instruments’ highly premium types/gauges of strings they make.
As a result, TI does not and cannot compete with large-scale, automated manufacturers in either production volume or price point.
Great strings - use and like them also ![]()
Joining the light touch club, I not only survive but love the light and super light gauge string like the 90-30 set.
Unlike the Jazz flats where TI has very little competition Jazz rounds has quite a bit of competitions ranging from light weight sets to specialist set like my other favorite Optima Unique studio gold set.
The unique studio provides crisps and clean zings at the regular gauge like 105-45. I have several sets. Both Jazz rounds and Unique Gold are competing against the TI flats currently on “my” new Alembic ![]()
Yeah Nanoweb Stainless are pretty top tier for me, or if I want more “mellow”, D’Addario NYXLs which are nice and bright but more rounded.
Mostly I am just glad Elixir makes stainless strings I don’t despise like I do literally every other brand of stainless rounds I have tried. Love the tone, hate the roughness, and Elixir fixes that - the Nanoweb Stainless feel about 90% as good as NYXLs to me.
Conversely the NYXL’s feel great, are about 90% as bright as the Nanoweb Stainless (and are much brighter than the Nanoweb Nickels), cost only 2/3 as much, but last about half as long ![]()

100% agree with this. I also love that they sell a set in 50 - 105, so I get a G that’s got just a bit more oomph without having to file the nut by plopping in a second D string. If I want to do mellower, I still like GHS pressurewounds. Great strings, you can EQ them to sound nearly as bright as rounds or thud nearly as much as flats. I’ve got those on my Sire M5.
For a BBPH? That is a great price
My BBPH is in the house! It’s even better looking in person than the photos suggest. I can’t believe the depth of shades of red. Just fantastic. Mint condition. Not a scratch on it. A little on the heavy side, though. Here are a couple of photos taken by the seller. From what I can tell, he purchased it new in 2021 (he included the confirmation card from the Italian shop it was purchased from). The gig bag looks brand new. It must have been stored really well; not a speck of dust on it.
Just incredible you got one too. Congrats!
Congrats @TheMaartian !! I’m a bit jealous of you and @faydout !
Dude, that is so frikkin cool. We’re already Mike Watt twins, but this is next level. So, what do you think about playability (its lighter than my 734) and the sound? I’m loving having an active Pbass.

Yeah, that red looks killer.
what do you think about playability
I haven’t had much time to play it yet, but so far, in one word? Silk! The neck is a dream. My one dislike is the plastic knob legend. It’s coming off. Too trailer park for me.
Do you have your strings mounted thru-body? If so, what length did you use? Extra long or just standard long? I like that the thru-body ferrules are angled and not a 90° bend. Not sure that I’d want flats on it, but they might work fine thru-body.
Red satin neck,
It plays much better than the red satin faded cherry neck on the SG I gave away when I got my 2007 Week One SG Supreme. It’s in good hands now (a Russian expat living in New Zealand). It shows up in some of her videos.
plastic knob legend
Dibs on this for a band name.

No one keeps these on, just take it off and keep it.
plastic knob legend
I think this was supposedly to match his 1200S. It has one advantage over the knobs on the other newer BB’s. You can look down and see where you’ve got your EQ dialed vs having to do the little wiggle to feel for the notch im the middle.

I’m looking for some nice new ones. I may just order a set of the 734 knobs. I like the look of them.

I think so, I’ve got a set of 50 - 105’s to throw on but I’m cheap and am going to wait till the EXLs that are on there now “need” to be replaced (not a fan of EXLs). It’s got the same satin neck and string thru as the 734, these take standard length fine. I end up with about an inch of slack to cut off on the G.

Thanks!
