Sounds great to me!
Well done.

Here is my little attempt for this song :

Lots of fun to play this (especially with the ghost notes), much less to video edit the thing (new OS, new workflow …)

It’s crazy that I started practicing this almost 2 years ago and kinda gave up. Need to get back on it and playing in general. Hope you post something soon-ish.

I’m not really doing the 50 Song Challenge, but I was looking for a song and “My Girl” was always one of my favorites.

Jesus @JerryP, you should have been an recording engineer. You more than nailed the tone here. It’s your superpower!

well played as always

Thank you John! Your comments are always very much appreciated.

If I could go back in time I would do that!

Me too!

Here is my recording.
I am still quite camera shy and make way more mistakes when the camera is rolling. So, a few missed notes and inconsistent note length, but I still like how it sounds.

I also really liked my tone for a change!
I do have flats on which have not been changed in a few years, and I have not cleaned the fretboard in a long time, so I guess the gunk does keep the funk?!?
:joy:

I also played it only on the E and A strings (other than the intro), I don’t like how thin my D and G strings sound for this song.

It is just the P pickup, tone all the way down, and an EQ pedal (bass boosted a touch and treb down a touch).

All in all I really enjoyed this one. I obviously liked the ending, so I played an extra round of it!

nice tone and perfect timing and playing.
Bass a tad high in mix, if you care, but sounds great!!!

Thank you.

I do like the bass high in the mix, as it is a bass challenge after all. Maybe later I’ll try to work on better mixing, as in closer to the original, but I am still way from it in my mastering of the software.

No doubt that this challenge pushed me way ahead in this regard already!

I love this song! And it has enough variation so I decided to learn it note for note. Took a little longer on this so I could play it by heart which was a fun process.

I also decided that as I know it by heart, I wouldn’t take too many repeats with my recording, so this is the first take I recorded with a couple of flubs. I could go back and re-record it without mistakes but I don’t really feel like that’s the point right now.

Great job Mmatt! Nice tone as well.

Thanks. I’m using the Amplitube amp sim, so I looked for a James Jamerson preset.

Sounds really really good! Well played.

Pro tip - when playing Motown tunes, put a piece of weatherstripping foam, or sponge, etc at the top of the bridge ala James Jamerson on the P-bass to get that deadened muting sound that these songs all have. It levels up the sound a lot (FYI - experiment with various foams - I use a piece of foam paintbrush, super cheap - and position, and check tuning).

Great job.

I did that when I recorded my cover of September and it made a big difference to the sound, definitely gets it closer to that old school thump. Though I had to leave the G string open since my foam muted it too hard. It’s just a strip of the stuff I use to seal my window air conditioners.

Here’s my version of song #9.

The Temptations - My Girl (Bass cover)

What an iconic song! I feel like I was smiling every time I played it.

I fiddled with the effects pedal until I found something I liked, but the icing on the cake was the Ernie Ball Mute Noodle. I was looking for sponge height dimensions to properly dampen the sustain and stumbled upon this little gadget. I’m glad I went with it - it’s perfect for this song!
